One of Australia’s Most Loved Tea Brands Just Dropped 3 Epic New Releases Lark’s Latest Rare Cask Single Malt Takes Us to the Graveyard 13. Hornitos Plata Tequila If Milagro is a little out of your budget, Hornitos Plata Tequila may be better suited for your needs. Flavour isn’t compromised for affordability, with their tequila hitting smooth and strong, with a citrus after taste to boot. Their motto suggests their drink is “A Shot Worth Taking,” which we believe is a great attitude when it comes to tequila. I recently attended the Merriment & Co product range launch ( you can read my blog on the launch here) where they introduced some exciting new lines of fine liquor hitting the Cape Town scene just in time for summer. Sierra Tequila Silver is a mature, clear tequila. Its full, fruity, fresh aroma dominated by a subtle chili note reflects the Tequilana Weber Azul Agave and also contains slight hints of green apple and young pineapple. Nuances of pepper give Sierra Tequila Silver that certain something, making it a feisty tequila.

Sierra tequila is owned by German company Borco. It was published at 1981 and after a year it was already most sold tequila in Germany. Due to producer, it nowadays have 87% market share for all sold tequilas in Germany. Also it’s most sold tequila in many other countries in Europe, but globally Jose Cuervo (owned by Diageo) is still bigger on sale numbers. You may have a hard time getting your hands on a bottle of el Jimador Reposado, thanks to its newfound success and popularity. Winning silver at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020, everybody is itching to have a taste. If you do manage to get your lips around a glass of the hot stuff, you’ll discover the rich, 100 per cent agave flavours, as well as a toasty after taste from the barrel it was aged in. Tequila is a form of mezcal that’s derived from either lowland or highland blue agave plants and produced in specific regions of Mexico, namely Jalisco. Highland agave plants tend to yield a sweeter or fruitier spirit, while lowland agave plants tend to yield earthier flavours. When Merriment & Co chose a tequila brand to market and distribute in South Africa, they were not prepared to settle for anything but the very best.

Merriment & Co is doing us all a huge favour; let’s face it. It’s bringing the best the world has to offer, right to the most Southern tip of Africa, just for our drinking pleasure. I think Sierra Tequila and the Mixer range are much needed additions to their ever growing portfolio of the world’s finest liquors, and it served as a welcome reminder of my love for this feisty, but festive, drink.

Now that you know what you’re doing, ’tis time to get sipping. Take your newfound knowledge along with you as we dive into the best drops on the planet. Here is a list of the best tequila brands and bottles to test out… 1. Teremana Tequila Sierra Tequila is made from the unique Blue Agave, grown in the province of Jalisco / Mexico. The whole production process of Sierra Tequila is permanently controlled by the government by means of the CRT- Consejo Regulador del Tequila. The agave and the distillation process fulfill the highest quality standards. Herradura Reposado is another premium tequila on our list. Herradura is doing all the right things to make sure that their tequila hits the spot for consumers around the world. Aged in American oak barrels for eleven months, the tequila takes on this sweet oak and cinnamon flavour, as well as the natural vanilla notes found in agave. For a twist, you can opt for the Double Barrel Reposado, which is aged for an additional eleven months in a charred barrel for extra flavour.

Sierra Tequila and Sierra Antiguo

Produced in the Destileria Sierra Unidas, Mexico, Sierra Tequila is available in three distinct types depending on flavour and grade of maturity: Sierra Blanco, Sierra Reposado and Sierra Antiguo. For an inexpensive tequila that offers great taste, you can’t go past Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado. The cost of the drink makes it great for parties and event hosting, but don’t think this means you can’t also enjoy a bottle of this fine tequila to yourself. Tasty enough to sip, you’ll find yourself halfway through the bottle in no time. And if you’re into mixing, Jose Cuervo has a line of easy-made margarita’s that’ll hit the spot.

The Little Hedonist has made every effort to ensure that the information in this post was correct at the time of publication. However, I do not assume any liability caused by errors. It was everything I wished for and more. The bottles are sleek, but bold; exclusive but fun. Sierra produces smooth sipping tequilas, without losing its cheeky party spirit and famous agave bite. I couldn’t possibly choose a favourite between Sierra Tequila Silver, Europe’s most popular choice or the award winning Sierra Reposado Gold. It was like greeting an old friend you’ve not seen for a long time; you recognise the face and features, but underneath the familiarity lies a different, more refined identity that speaks of a new sense of purpose; and a new life.

Traditionally, extra aging also leads to a richer, more complex flavour, though it won’t automatically improve the spirit’s overall taste. In other words, any given tequila’s qualitative mileage will vary depending on a host of conditions. Nevertheless, few drinkers out there would ever turn down a premium Añejo or ExtraAñejo. How Do You Taste Tequila? Of the ranges introduced on the launch night, I was most excited about Sierra Tequila. Having steered far away from the student experience for many years, although always harbouring a secret taste for the Mexican tipple, I was ready to try again; this time approaching it with a bit more maturity. If you’re drinking the good stuff, don’t waste your time with mixers. Instead, sip the tequila as you would any quality spirit. That is, pour it into a proper glass (like a brandy snifter), swirl it in the glass, smell it, and taste it in small doses, exploring the flavour in your mouth. You’re welcome to pair it with a lime wedge or some cubes of ice. As for us – we sip the best tequilas neat. The Destilería Sierra, located on a historical Hacienda in Guadalajara, the capital of Tequila, is home of the award winning Sierra Tequila. The art and passion of production has been passed down three generations to the current Master Distiller who guarantees the exceptional taste of Sierra Tequila. The Sierra Silver Tequila is just as smooth, but more elegantly understated than the golden Reposado. It’s milder; more delicate, but perfectly balanced when mixed with the slight acidity of the lime juice. Where Reposado is moody and alluring, Silver Tequila is fresh, light and reminds you of ripe pineapples with a cheeky chilli afterthought. It’s very obvious why it’s Europe’s favourite. The kind distillers at Espolòn utilise a modern twist on their Espolòn Blanco tequila. Instead of using traditional ovens, Espolòn uses modern autoclaves. This introduction of technology allows Espolòn to better control the production of their tequila, resulting in a finer tasting spirit, for a lower cost might we add. After being rested in charred American oak barrels, the drink takes on a smoked flavour, unique to this brand. I never follow anything by the book. I live to improvise. I decided on a novel handled beer-mug, instead of the traditional highball glass. I also rimmed my glass with Himalayan pink salt, because I do think the salt enhances a lot of the natural flavours of the tequila. I also used the best quality, freshly squeezed orange juice I could find. I added a touch of grenadine at the end. I garnished generously with citrus and mint, but that was more for the striking colour contrasts, rather than for flavour. I wanted to add as little as possible that could interfere with the natural flavours of the tequila.
