Different Class" is true class material, Pulp spreading their wings and finally get the recognition they deserved ever since that funny little 1983 bastard-child of a band. If you become obsessed with source origin over actual sound/pressing quality and cant accept a digital step or digital recording being pressed onto the vinyl medium you have entered the realm of vinyl snobbery and arent able to actually the music for what it is. was last Friday (30th), I wanted to include Pulp’s Different Class in Vinyl Corner, as it is one of the best albums from the 1990s.

As well as perfectly capturing the behavior of his characters, Cocker grasps the nuances of language, creating a dense portrait of suburban and working-class life. Check your lucky numbers/That much money could drag you under, oh/What's the point of being rich/If you can't think what to do with it? now hooked on bands I’d never heard of let alone exploring some different sounds outside my Laneway.

Mostly though, it’s an original and ’90s-contemporary sound that Pulp work up on Different Class, characterized by a sort of shabby sumptuousness, a meagre maximalism. Be aware that even sealed copies of this may have vinyl that looks and plays like it been thrown through a hedge. From the faux-show tune romp of the anthemic opener "Mis-Shapes" and the glitzy, gaudy stomp of "Disco 2000" (complete with a nicked riff from Laura Branigan's "Gloria") to the aching ballad "Underwear" and the startling sexual menace of "I Spy," Pulp construct a diverse, appealing album around the same basic sound.

You can always tell a novice "audiophile" on here when they are championing Digital Music On vinyl over proper pressings like the Plain Recordings version that's mastered straight from the analog tapes. Alluding to society and the British class system, 'Different Class' was definitely of its time, but still resonates today. Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all - it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked, kitchen-drama pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here.A large aperture at the front and 6 reversible artwork inserts allow a choice of 12 different sleeve designs. I often think of Pulp as being ‘outside’ of Britpop, as the music seemed so much smarter and a bit too cool in its own way for such a scene.
