Description

The story begins when Olive, her older sister Suki and her younger brother Cliff go to the cinema and get caught in an air raid attack. Olive also shows substantial resilience and determination throughout the book, making her a wonderful, relatable role model for children. This is a great resource that can accompany chapter 5 – Caring for Evacuees is a National Service from the Letters from the Lighthouse book. This resource features large display letters which are perfect as the backdrop for a display about lighthouses as part of a Seaside topic.

My favourite character is Esther because she stands up to the most fierce, and even if she was a bully, that's changed now! She has also worked as a news reporter, an avocado picker and the person who punches holes into filofax paper. I have read numerous stories set during World War II and having at the center the evacuation of English city children to the countryside.

I did read it really quickly There is secrecy, mystery, adventure and real danger within the story which is narrated by the main character, a twelve years old girl. This asymmetric character structure gives the story room to delve into the deep-rooted prejudices often faced by refugees, as seen through the eyes of open-minded children. This resource is based on chapter 9 – Attack On All Fronts and focuses on the similes used in the book. The pack even goes a step further by offering a selection of resources and activities at the end of the pack to support teachers in the classroom. My main critique is that the pace of the book seems to soar at some points meaning particular sections feel rushed.

Letters from the Lighthouse - LoveReading4Kids

My favourite character was Olive because she had a lot of courage and she did things for other people that needed help. Carroll has written wonderful characters, a realistic plot where the kids can make significant contributions to the war effort without it being unrealistic, and added just enough of the hard stuff so as not to negate the horror of war or overburden kids with it either. This one is different as it is more than narrating what it was like for these children, having to leave their families behind, to be - not always voluntarily and happily but more begrudgingly - taken in by strangers in the country side; it turns into a full-blown mystery involving code-cracking and a major rescue operation.

The thing that touched me most within this wonderful novel was the opportunity to hear the stories behind all those effected by war along with the refugees and the impact they had on the locals. The children are evacuated from London to the countryside and it’s there where young Olive and her brother Cliff will plunge into a mysterious, rollercoaster of an adventure to be reunited with their sister. Her sudden escalation of setting at that particular moment, paints a vivid, gritty picture of life in London during WWII, making the overall scene resonate in a much deeper, more meaningful way. Your Ks2 class will then use this information to answer the comprehension questions based on: retrieval, inference and vocabulary.

The book is packed with mystery and suspense which made me want to read it as I love mystery and history books.Initially, I didn't want to read a WW2 book, but having read it, I'm really glad that I did and it has left me in the mood for more Emma Carroll books. I thought the book showed the history of the war very well but I think it is more suitable for older children because as we know the war was a difficult time and a lot of people died. The main theme of this book is how peopole have to leave home to fight for their country but Olive soon realises that her father isn't coming home.
