The author sets out to show you that “change is a matter of going deeper,” not a compilation of outward improvements, but an inner conviction that you already have everything you need in Christ. We can not grow in our spiritual maturity without first embracing Christ completely and relying on him as the agent of growth instead of ourselves.

Through the downpour they seemed to fade into the washed-out grey of the sky itself, so that it was difficult to tell where the one started and the other finished. So according to this preface, I shouldn't even be reading this book but as a lowly lay person should have picked up the "more accessible" version. Further, he argues that these men found themselves “coming back in a post-conversion way to the liberating truth of the same gospel” (109).

The nine chapters of this book are not sequential steps in growing; they are different facets of the one diamond of growth. I thought I hadn’t read it before and kept finding annotations in my handwriting and realized this was my second read like 3/9 chapters in.As it stands, believers could walk away from this volume thinking that their addictive behavior can simply be solved by greater looking to Jesus.
