We’ll start with the tiddlers of the bunch; the Small beasts. They all go on a 30mm base, and there’s only four of them, but they do have some key differences. First up is the archetypal anthropomorphic animal, the mouse. Each sculpted figure shown below has a scale picture with it, showing its height in millimetres. All our models are supplied unpainted. Well Michael, thank you so much for taking the time to sit down and speak with me today, unfortunately I think that’s really all the time we’ve got right now, I know we could easily go on for a few hours more. I had Haggis propped in a prime eye-ball position and mulled over what to do for a good number of weeks. Try again or go metal? Well the other day I said enough is enough and went with the latter. I laugh at myself now but within a minute or two of applying the base coat a great sense of relief came over me –“that was more like it!” I thought to myself.

Gaslands lets you use spare Hot Wheels or other toy cars you have laying around to participate in high-octane death races on the tabletop. Image:Osprey Games/Pete Ward Each allegiance will also get themselves a Den which works as your base of operations throughout the campaign. This is something that might inform your choice of terrain during games and have you tinkering around with all sorts. These can also be upgraded throughout a campaign which is neat, giving them a character all of their own. Royalists provide you with bonuses to the Strike stat of two of your characters, and the Smithy Den upgrade, allowing easy access to weapons and armour. If you’re planning a close-combat, military style Warband, Royalists are a good place to start. Hares, otters and hounds can form a good core for a Royalist Warband. If you're interested in learning about the rules for the Giant Cave Bear, you can actually get them for free as part of the latest (and updated) Oathsworn Journal. In most cases, the Bear is never going to be added alongside the rest of your normal warband but it does have a behaviour chart and a selection of different stat lines depending on how angry, wounded or generally peeved it is by your presence. Normally, we just smile cheerfully (or is that maniacally?) and reply ‘Just get the half a dozen miniatures you like best!’ which usually does the job… but sometimes people want more information. So this is our attempt to give you just that! Once again, this helps reinforce the narrative element of the game and is a big improvement in the final rules over the ones we’ve been playing for the past year or so. Scenario Aftermath Welcome to The Warchest. This is my sandpit for anything that I have an interest in. My main aim is to post some photos of miniatures I have collected and painted but I may well post some other randomness.

Green Lizards– again, similar to a mouse in terms of stats, but slightly better at remaining hidden. Freebeasts don’t provide any stat increases, but give three free rolls on the Rare Items table, and the ability to modify any rolls on that table by + or -1. These items get added to your starting Equipment free, and can give you some very useful gear. The Alchemy Laboratory gives you easy access to poisons and potions too. If you like the idea of dealing in exotic items, and aren’t concerned with such foolish notions as ‘honour’, then the Freebeasts might be the right choice. Foxes are a traditional Freebeast critter; weasels and ferrets are a good fit too.

Talk to us...

Michael mentioned in the comments that they often clear out infestations of larvae, beetles, cave spiders and other mindless beasts. Perhaps they might end up running into a deadly Stag Beetle Grub that has invaded the sewers and is scaring off the local populace. Yeah, it was a mix, really. It depended on who you were working for. I did a lot of 15mm historicals, a lot of six mil sci-fi, and then odd stuff that wasn’t for war games companies. Like I did various bits of jewellery for people, I did broaches and things, and basically whatever work was available, just if it was sculpting, The big question then. Well, for me I think the overriding answer lies close to what we were talking about at the start of this article. It reminds me of my childhood reading Redwall books. More than anything, that is what drives this into the position of ‘must play’. When you first start choosing a Warband, the sheer number of options can be a bit confusing. People keep asking us endless questions; which races work well together, are mice any good at fighting, should I just get foxes, and should they all be wizards? Complicated stuff, obviously… Four miniatures were previewed over on the Burrows & Badgers Facebook Group recently showing off a range of different characters that have decided to put on armour and take on the task.
