Feeling a bit dubious about running an iron over your wooden table? Or maybe you’ve already tried that and it didn’t work? Then here are some other ways to remove heat marks from wood without applying more heat. Method 1: Toothpaste and bicarbonate of soda The heat expands the timber, opening up pores that moisture can then penetrate. When the area cools down and the wood contracts again, the water then becomes trapped beneath the surface. and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. (Image credit: Future/Natasha Brinsmead) 6. Are made-for-purpose products worth the money?

The verdict: This one was a bit hit and miss in all honesty. While it did nothing on the ingrained dark water stain, I did have huge success in removing white water rings from some bedside tables and all it took was a gentle rub. It also made a difference to some light water stains on the wooden frame of our bi fold doors so definintely worth a go on lighter, fresher stains. If you haven’t got one, then a pillowcase or t-shirt will work too. Just make sure they’re plain white to avoid the risk of colour bleeding. Start by cleaning the surface with a damp cloth, then soak the steel wool in olive oil to help prevent scratches. Other suggestions from cleaning enthusiasts included using olive oil, walnuts and a damp tea towel and a hot iron. Remember to test in an inconspicuous area first to ensure no damage will occur. Then, dampen a cloth with mineral spirits and gently rub the stained area using circular motions. The mark should start to lift from the wood. The moisture can also react with the tannins in the wood, creating a chemical reaction that can result in a white or gray discoloration on the surface.

For deeper marks the Ring remover can be applied with Priory Polishes Fine Steel Wool (Grade 0000). Using coasters or protective mats can help prevent white ring marks from forming on wooden surfaces. Ironing method: Place a clean, white cloth or towel over the moisture stain and set your iron to its lowest heat setting. Gently iron the cloth, moving it in circular motions for about 15 to 20 seconds. The heat from the iron will help lift the moisture from the wood, removing the white stain from its surface. Our preferred product is olive oil mixed with a little salt. This is most effective as the salt’s drying effect reduces the wood’s moisture content. While it may sound odd given how they’re caused, the easiest way to remove heat marks from wood is typically by applying more heat! Rustins Ring Remover 125ml is a perfect renovator for wood as it is a fine mixture of abrasives that will remove ring marks, water and heat mark damage from a wide range of wooden surfaces. For instance of lacquered, varnished and French Polished surfaces. Placing a hot or cold object directly onto a wooden surface can cause the wood to expand or contract, which can result in condensation forming on the surface. The toothpaste method did not, for me, produce any results on light or dark water stains. (Image credit: Future/Natasha Brinsmead) 5. Does Bar Keepers Friend remove water stains?

Bicarbonate of soda paste: Mix bicarbonate of soda (also known as baking soda) with water to create a cleaning paste. Apply the paste to the burn mark and let it sit for a few hours or overnight for more severe burn marks. Gently wipe it off using a clean microfibre cloth and assess the results. Repeat if necessary. Be sure to follow the instructions on the oxalic acid product label carefully, as different products may require different dilution ratios or application methods. The first method to try is the hairdryer approach. Select a low heat setting (you want warm air not hot) and hold the dryer 3-5 inches above the stain. This is best for deeper, older stains, especially if you’re working with a varnished or painted surface. If the appearance of the stain doesn’t seem to be changing, you can also try introducing steam which has been found to work well in some cases. We use a third-party courier service who have a strict policy on abuse or harassment towards their drivers. In any case where there is abuse or harassment, the driver is within their rights to refuse delivery. Less abrasive than sandpaper, Liberon’s Ultra Fine Steel Wool can be used to remove heat marks from wood. Use mayonnaise or petroleum jelly: Apply mayonnaise (it’s weird, but trust us!) or petroleum jelly to a microfibre cloth and rub the stain in circular motions. For tougher stains, apply a small amount directly to the watermarks and leave it overnight. Wipe it off the next day using a clean cloth, and the stain should be noticeably diminished. Removing these stains requires a bit more effort than burns or moisture marks, which are typically surface-level stains. The rings pretty much completely disappeared.
