This is a versatile cooking appliance that takes a little bit of getting used to until you can realise its full potential. Within each basket is a crisper plate, which can sit either one-third or two-thirds of the way down depending on what you’re cooking – you can bring foods like sausages closer to the heat source when grilling for a better finish. A handy little touch is the addition of grippy silicone feet on both sides of the grill plate that helps it stay securely place, even if you’re tipping a basket of chips onto a plate.

There’s no guidance in the instructions for how much food can be cooked in the air frying basket, but the instructions have an illustration of a basket filled up with chips for the fries setting, and the manufacturer states it’ll accommodate up to 1kg. However, given the mixed results this produced, I would recommend just covering the bottom of the basket with potato. The Chefree can also cook for longer without heating up the kitchen. I made roast lamb shoulder and was thrilled with the results.Overall we found the air fryer performed well, we definitely used it more as a grill than a typical air fryer, because the grilled food was just delicious and we loved the little seared food lines!

Grilling food using your oven can deliver mixed results, as anyone who’s ever burnt meat or veggies while using one can attest to. Cooking steak was so easy and you even get gorgeous grill marks on your steaks 🙂 What’s more, most of the fat drains from the food into the basket below allowing for healthier cooking. It was quite a big, bulky machine to heave out of the box and, just by itself, took up half the depth of my standard-sized worktop. It was far larger than any of my other small appliances, and more akin to the footprint of a small microwave. Its height when closed would probably allow it to be stored below wall units – but only just, and definitely not when in use. Its accessories are a cooking pot, which must always be used, plus a grill plate with handles and wire air frying basket that fits inside the pot. Having two completely independent cooking drawers means you can easily prepare two different foods at once, also using different programmes, times and temperatures for each drawer (e.g. roast in one; air fry in the other), yet also instruct the Chefree to have everything ready to serve at the same time. This 'Sync Finish Function' is actually reasonably amazing, to be fair, and it takes a lot of hassle out of cooking large meals to feed a family or even just something for yourself of an evening. No need to cook elements of the menu sequentially: everything can be ready at once (provided your planned meal fits into two drawers, obvs). I cooked proper family meals on my Chefree and found the large basket an absolute joy to use and to clean.While not especially heavy (5.7kg), the Chefree Air Fryer Grill AFG01 is chunky, taking up a sizable portion of worktop space. It’s styled in a similar way to other indoor grills, such as Ninja’s Foodi Max – with a chunky handle to lift the lid, like a barbecue, and carry handles on each side. It also includes the ability to air fry – suitable for those who aren’t sure how often they’ll make chips and other air-fried goodies, but would like the option from time to time. Design and features SYNC Finish, Serve Together: Thanks to 2 independent frying baskets, you can use different programs, times and temp in each draw, both ready at the same time. With Dual Cook Function, get the double guilt-free fried foods with the SYNC cook function. Rather than shaking a drawer to toss the chips, as you would in a conventional air fryer, here it’s necessary to lift the basket out to shake while wearing oven gloves, meaning that it’s more involved. I found this quite awkward, especially as the handles on the wire basket aren't very big and so difficult to grip while wearing gloves. One of the more interesting features of the Chefree AFW20 compared to most air fryers is the inclusion of windows, bringing its comparison to a full-blown oven closer than ever – especially when combined with in-basket lighting to give you a clearer look at your food.

Cooking Pot: has an impressive 6L capacity that can cook proper big family meals. The ceramic coating makes it a cinch to clean plus it is dishwasher safe. The Chefree AFW20 air fryer is the latest iteration on the air fryer concept, building on the well-established form and function, yet still managing to add a few new appealing features. One thing to note though is that it’s top opening, so you need to make sure there’s space to open the top fully, so it’s probably best placed where there’s no cupboards above it. The Chefree air fryer has a large cooking area ViewCook Window: Features the viewing window in the front of the basket, together with the internal light, it allows you to keep an eye on what was cooking - without opening the basket and letting heat escape. I placed fresh chipped potato in the basket that had been peeled, rinsed and tossed in a drizzle of oil before adding this to the preheated cooking pot. The fries programme has a preset of 200°C for 18 minutes, which I suspected was too short for making chips from scratch.The grill feature is something we really think ‘sells’ the air fryer. The food cooked on the grill was tender, succulent and easily as good as outdoor BBQ food if not better! You can also search recipes by your specific Chefree model (Chefree makes more than one air fryer, as you can imagine), so the app will tell you exactly which buttons to press. It's the ultimate idiot's guide to air frying, but genuinely useful to get you up and running. Once you get the hang of things, new ideas and ingredients should start to pop into your head unbidden, as the potential of the device gradually dawns on you. The dual 4L basket design allows you to cook two different foods at different temperatures and even different cooking modes, at the same time, with a Sync Finish option removing the need to manually time your cook so all your food is ready at the same time. The performance of the AFW01 Air Fryer was good overall but there are some areas that could use improvement. For example, as there are no recipes, or guidance for cooking different types of food, I was unsure what programme to use for frozen food, although as 200°C was the highest temperature available, this seemed like the best option. Thankfully you can adjust the cooking time and the temperature while the food is cooking. I would however like the option to skip the preheating, as certain recipes do not require it. The Chefree AWF20 serves not only as a great alternative to a conventional oven with faster cook times and less energy consumption, but it also has a leg-up on most of the air fryer competition.If you have limited space but still love cooking, grilling and baking then the Chefree can replace your oven and grill. The Chefree In Use The cooking basket is much easier to clean than the usual air fryer baskets and I had no issues with burning or smoking. The air circulation is better than the pull-out basket air fryers. Using the crisper basket As mentioned previously, the Air Fryer Grill is big, meaning that you’ll either need sufficient counter space for it, or a decent amount of cupboard space to store it. One annoyance is that only the grill plate or the air frying basket will fit inside, so you’ll need to find a home for one of them by itself. The hope would be that you use this machine so often it earns its place permanently on your worktop, in which case you may not notice how much of a space hog it is. How does it rate online? The CHEFREE AFG01 is more of a multi-cooker than a stand-alone air fryer. It comes with a large cooking pot with a grill plate and crisper basket as optional inserts.
