Description

The Canon EOS 200D produced images of excellent quality during the review period. This camera produces noise-free JPEG images from ISO 100 all the way up to ISO 1600, with noise first appearing at ISO 3200 - a very good performance for a 24 megapixel APS-C Sensor. The faster settings of 6400 and 12800 display progressively more noise, with the fastest setting of 25600 best reserved for emergenices. There’s no shortage of fine detail in the centre of this wide-angle shot, and only a slight fall-off of focus towards the edges (1/160s, f/9, ISO 100, 29mm equivalent) Once I’d read the manual (top tip there readers!) and worked out how the tagging worked, I became really fond of Canon’s solution. There’s no Wifi connections or logging to worry about, nor the process of manually applying the log later. You just ensure the app’s running on you phone when you want the locations logged and it all happens automatically as you shoot – a perfect application for Bluetooth. Oh and in case you’re wondering, the Location information option in the app is for Canon’s compact cameras; I just feel it should be greyed-out when connected to the 200D / SL2 to avoid confusion, especially as the actual solution is so much easier. Up on the top plate the on/off switch is now separated from the mode dial, making it slightly less awkward to operate with your thumb. Pushing the switch beyond its on/off settings engages video mode. The mode dial has been simplified and the PASM manual modes are clearly marked from the automatic modes.

zone dual-layer metering sensor with Evaluative, partial, spot (centre only) and centre-weighted average available We tested the EOS 200D with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens lens, which offers a fairly versatile focal range and crucially includes image stabilisation. This is important for Canon, as competitors like Sony, Olympus and Pentax all offer image stabilisation in their comparable cameras. The difference between Canon (and Nikon) and the others is that Sony, Olympus and Pentax have opted for stabilisation via the camera body, rather than the lens, which therefore works with their entire range of lenses. Canon's system is obviously limited by which lenses you choose, but it does offer the slight advantage of showing the stabilising effect through the viewfinder. Canon and Nikon also claim that a lens-based anti-shake system is inherently better too.Canon wants you to make the most of the camera, so helps you explore the options in each mode with a handy on-screen guided interface. It’s all operated by touch, but to prevent unwanted adjustments, you’ll first need to enter the Q menu either by pressing the SET button on the rear, or by tapping the Q icon on-screen; try tapping anywhere else on-screen and you’ll be instructed to tap the Q icon first. Once you’ve entered the Q menu, the screen is split into an upper and lower section. In the upper section you’ll see the more graphical options like sliders to adjust the key settings, while in the lower half you can tap a number of smaller panels to adjust things like the drive and AF modes. To be fair, a DSLR could only allow an electronic shutter in live view, but it’d still be a useful feature to have. I should also add the 200D / SL2 does actually deploy an electronic shutter when capturing a timelapse video, but you can’t use it in normal live view shooting modes. The Canon 200D shares a similar set of features with the Canon EOS 100D. Both models are the smallest DSLR cameras produced by Canon, described as "the smallest and lightest DSLR" and are upper entry-level DSLRs. [7] However, the 200D has the improved Dual-pixel CMOS AF system and the improved DIGIC 7 image processor. [ citation needed]

There’s also a built-in flash that has a guide number of 9.8 (ISO 100), and a flash recycle time of 3 seconds. Naturally, those who require a bit more power can always attach a Canon’s EX series Speedlite or trigger wireless flash via the hot shoe.

So far all of these tests were performed with fixed focus. Setting the 200D / SL2 to AI Servo and shooting with the viewfinder saw me capture 74 frames in14.97 seconds, for a rate of 4.94fps. Switching to Live View and enabling Servo AF allowed me to capture 63 frames in 17.95 seconds for a rate of 3.5fps. In addition the EOS 200D is NFC equipped and there’s the option to initiate an always-on low-energy Bluetooth link between camera and mobile device. Canon EOS 200D – Build and design Returning to the app, the Remote Live Shooting option allows you to remote control the camera with your phone. You’ll see a Live View of the scene on your phone, and you can tap anywhere to refocus on a different subject, or double-tap for a magnified view. Depending on the camera’s shooting mode, you can also remote control the exposure, including the shutter, aperture, ISO or compensation, as well as White Balance, metering, AF mode, drive mode and image quality. Taking the app beyond most rivals, you can also adjust the manual focus of the lens in a choice of three increments in either direction – just like the ‘grown-up’ EOS Utility running on a Mac or Windows system. If the camera’s mode dial is set to Manual, you can also set the shutter to Bulb and tap once to start the exposure, and again to end it, complete with a handy timer on your phone’s screen; this is some compensation for the camera itself not featuring its own Bulb timers. Switching to Live View delivered quite a different autofocus experience. Not only was there much broader coverage across the frame, but it remained effective in lower light and didn’t mind if the subject was in the middle or the corners; it could also deploy face detection or zoned options.

The Canon EOS 200D is an interesting small-scale DSLR, designed for beginners, yet comprehensive enough for photo enthusiasts too. It arrives at a time when mirrorless models - such as Canon's own EOS M6 - are arguably the more prolific cameras to buy, thanks to speedy screen-based or viewfinder-based autofocus. A button at the top of the app lets you switch into Movie Mode, again with full control over exposure and other options; you can also use the phone’s screen to pull-focus remotely while filming. Whether shooting stills or filming video, the files are always recorded to the camera’s memory card, but as explained above, they’re easy to subsequently access from the Images On Camera option in the app.In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 200D / SL2 certainly feels solid enough for a consumer-grade DSLR, although as you'd perhaps expect not in the same league as the semi-professional models. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 200D / SL2 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white square. The advice doesn’t go into any great detail, but should prove useful to users just starting out with a DSLR who may be unsure of how changing key camera settings will affect their images. Unlike the ESO 77/800D, the EOS 200D's built-in pop-up flash doesn't feature a built-in Integrated Speedlite Transmitter for controlling up to two groups of off-camera Speedlites without the need for an external transmitter. Note that it also doesn't have a more advanced PC Sync port for connecting the camera to external lights, all of which rather limits the 200D's use in studio environments. There is the expected hotshoe for use with one of Canon's external flashguns. sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb (Total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode)
