Nearly all romantic comedies end in similar manners, so you know, in essence, how the film is going to end before you even pop it into your DVD player. The differing personalities are all beautifully depicted and there are a lot of very funny situations and conversations. Written and directed by Richard Curtis and produced by Duncan Kenworthy (the team behind NOTTING HILL and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL) this zingy British comedy weaves a vivid crazy quilt of interlocking or unrelated vignettes all dealing with the subject of love over the Christmas holidays in London. All star cast including Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson and Alan Rickman.

Thus, while the setting remains underground football violence, Love switches the attention to a different character, the youngster breaking into the crowd.

When I first saw this film at the cinema, my initial thoughts were the film was ok but not brillant. To a new bride (Keira Knightley) mistaking the distance of her husband's best friend for something it's not. This ensemble comedy tells ten separate but intertwining stories of love in London, leading up to a big climax on Christmas Eve. A wayward husband woos his secretary, only to learn how foolish he is, while the Prime Minister falls for his servant.

So, yes, the film is a bit over the top, a bit exaggerated, but it still works perfectly, has the perfect balance of humour and seriousness, and is one that I would see over and over again. Two sex scene doubles begin a relationship in a surprisingly chaste manner, and a man who makes his living from words finds love with a woman who cannot even speak his language. Also on tap are trailers for Along Came Polly and Peter Pan, Music of Love Actually with introductions by Curtis, and a music video for Kelly Clarkson's The Trouble With Love Is. I never really bought Hugh Grant as the Prime Minister, but his unlikely and funny relationship with Natalie (Martine McCutcheon) added a spark to the film.

This film has had a regular slot on tv and everytime it is on, I always found myself sitting down to watch it. I've seen a lot of the classic and modern Christmas films and there aren't many which measure up to the quality of Love Actually. Luckily, the opening scenes for each story are short but slowly become a bit longer and more involved, so by the middle of the film I found myself caught up in the lives unfolding on screen.Additionally, a pair of porn film stand-ins bond on the set, an artist fantasises about his friend's wife; and perhaps funniest of all, an ageing rock star ( Bill Nighy) tries to make his comeback with a Christmas novelty song. But plenty of the characters and situations were enjoyable enough for me to become interested in finding out just how all the relationships would work out in the end.
