But it's not always raining there and on fine days you can explore fellside paths to Styhead and Sprinkling tarns, admire the venerable Borrowdale yews immortalised in a poem by William Wordsworth and marvel at the remains of the Elizabethan wadd (graphite) mines on the fellside - once the most expensive mineral ever mined in Britain. Borrowdale stretches from the southern shores of Derwentwater into the heart of the Lake District. It’s been over 5 years since I was last up Bessyboot, and on that occasion the weather was mixed, to put it mildly, with rain, sleet, hailstorms, gale force wind, along with a few brighter spells. We experienced a white out on the summit, and there were no views whatsoever.
