You feel part of the ragtag crew of the Vulture God, you respect the Partheni for their strength, and empathise with the Ints for their troubles. Tell the Resplendent it is fucking on, she said to Sathiel, and by extension everyone else in system. I've seen some shade thrown his way in this sub before, as well as a lot of love, so I'm just wondering what people here think of his work generally. This is such an epic science-fiction series and every phenomenal piece of the puzzle fell together beautifully here.

What draws me most to this series are the amazing descriptions of the encounters of the Intermediary Idris Telemmier with the creatures of unspace, a level of space beneath the real where its visitors aren’t even real anymore. It's tricky getting the balance right between the universe-spanning grandeur and the more down to earth character-led politics. For some of books 2 and 3 I feared there was too much of the latter and the big picture was being neglected, but the ending was very satisfying. Please note that while none of the spoilers I mention are particularly notable, there will be spoilers in this review. Broken Harvest attempts to kidnap the crew again, and eventually catches them near Berlenhof, capital of Hugh. The answers behind the mysteries are weak and in many cases not worth the effort it took to get there. The implacable, unknowable, hostile aliens from another dimension aren’t a disappointing damp squib (hello, The Expanse!

But there is always the terrible cost, the loss of billions of lives of those who could not be loaded onto ships quickly enough and, of course, all the complexity of life on the planet about to be destroyed. No malas šķiet, ka kults kurā visi pielūdz austerveidīgus radījumus, kuriem pati ideja par kustību šķiet ķecerība. The Eye is surrounded by fragments of a vast spaceship which turns out to be its own unique design created by some unknown species. And then amazing developments happen with every character because the author does that magical thing where he makes every character matter. Only in the final stretch did things really start to get interesting, with the revelation of some of the mind blowing mysteries at the heart of the story.

And even if my expectations were for it to be something more surprising and exciting, it did provide a satisfying ending to the central mystery of the series (the nature of unspace and the mysterious masters of the architects). The mysterious thread throughout the series is definitely resolved in unexpected ways and it totally worked for me.Reading this series is like stumbling across the joy of reading all over again; opening up every possibility.
