It rolls over in feedback excesses, erupts with roaring trumpets and suddenly segues into gentle bebop piano loops. Saying no will not stop you from seeing our ads, but it may make them less relevant or more repetitive. Billy Woods is a real album specialist whose own personal history often tells the tale of world history.

Other songs address anxiety and stage pressure, with the Gil Scott Heron-like "Soundcheck" mentioning forgetting lyrics during every show. It is alive, not only because digital and analogue instruments crowd into the mix, but also because it refuses to embrace constant change.Maps is a concept album of sorts with the pair acting as road warriors well-versed in the horrors and wonders of the world. It is an album about trying to find your way home, after making your home wherever you lay your head.

It is a concept album based on the extensive touring billy woods undertook following the lifting of covid restrictions.I think we only collaborated once over the last four years and although we didn’t talk about it, I think we wanted to let that energy build again. Delivered through the haze of an irregular sleep schedule, the songs detail the alienation of spending weeks away from home, constantly shuttling between unfamiliar locations and occasionally having unpleasant incidents with authority figures or venue workers. Just wanted to mention that my copy was super staticky right out of the shrink and when I played it there was a lot of crackle…BUT I cleaned the disc just in case and set my counterweight to administer slightly less pressure on the disc and now the record plays and sounds great. Tracks like the intro "Kenwood Speakers" and wobbly, Selected Ambient Works Volume II-sampling "Babylon by Bus" describe existence in corporate America and traveling through soon-to-be-gentrified areas. Maps is a story of the road, or roads, taken and untaken; of living the dream and dreaming of another life.

Weaving between poignant memoir, deadpan humor, and incandescent bursts of surrealism, Maps cements both artists' place amongst the best of their time. In the years since Woods has had an exceptional run of releases including a 2020 collaboration with Moor Mother and two albums under the Armand Hammer moniker.
