When I got it, I was impressed by the sound. Thats why I made an own analysis to confirm or deny what you found out. My hypothesis was that there is some postfiltering after the DAC stage going on depending on the sample rate at which the device is used. The first of them is a move to a Sabre ESS9018 DAC chip. The next one is the added Bluetooth connectivity that the original X6 didn’t possess. All the usual digital inputs are present too. To cut things short, here’s the full list of features: This makes the X6 useless to my home setup. Still, I will just relocate it to work, where I can't use speakers anyway. If anyone is looking to buy the X6 and use with powered speakers, keep this in mind.

We should see a rule flat output. So better pair this with rather bright headphones to compensate. Hmmm. Interesting question. Actually, I'd totally forgotten that those 'pre-outs' were there. (My desire was for some pre-ins, so I could try it as a standalone amp, to compare against the H10.) But now, I realise that I may be able do a dac comparison, instead. If there’s anything to complain about, it’s a slight midrange dryness, meaning that both instruments and vocals could’ve done with a bit more body and tone decay. But this gets obvious only if you compare it to more expensive gear. On its own, and for its price, DAX X6 MKII is a stunningly capable performer. In-Ear Compatibility The FX Audio DAC-X6 comes in a basic brown box with the company brand on the front and “Mini Audio DAC. Your Music Dream!”

What can I say, even at 32khz the drop off in high frequencies is not as high as I expected and the drop is moved upwards when a higher sample rate is used, as I expected. If anyone wants to review my files, I uploaded the recordings at https://nilsschneider.de/temp/whitenoise_test_dac_x6.zip The FX-Audio DAC-X6 is a headphone AMP and a 24 bit DAC. With an AMP, you can power high impedance headphones, and a DAC converts digital sound into analog – essentially smoothing out the stepped digital signal. You can learn much more about this in the brilliant article that can be read here. Switching to Hifiman HE-400i headphones, most of the differences went away. After listening for a while, I could still hear some improvement from the DAC-X6 but clearly this is a less demanding headphone than the HD-650 is. It is also more comfortable to wear. As for other noise(s); I've not noticed anything. This, at least, suggests to me that the DAC-X6 isn't particularly sensitive to computer generated interference, via USB.

A bit on testing – I used 320 Kbps FLAC files for audio, played through MusicBee. My headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros have a V shaped sound curve, with slightly recessed mids and higher treble and bass, meaning that they are quite bright headphones. I then switched to headphone listening and comparing the DAC-X6 against Fiio E10K. Without level matching, the DAC-X6 easily pulls ahead. Even with level matching, the DAC-X6 sounded noticeably better with the Sennheiser HD-650. There was more bass, more clarity, etc.The DAC X6 (high biased, opamp rolled) is a brilliant piece of budget hifi. I love it. The combo with the modded T50RP represents absolutely stunning value. Now I realise that this must be, for sure, transformer hum, as both these amps have theirs onboard (two, in the case of the H10). But, the X6's is external. The feature set is quite rich with USB, optical (toslink) and coax S/PDIF inputs. The unit is externally powered which is another unique thing in this low price rage. As such, power consumption from USB port is minimal at 50 milliamps. My recently acquired Senfer 4in1 IEM also had a noticeable improvement with the X6. They’re slightly harder to drive than many of my other IEMs and the X6 seems to really bring out the life in them, particularly with acoustic guitars, high hats and an improved soundstage but let’s not forget the extra extension on the bass too. Conclusion Front panel buttons are old fashioned toggle switches but they have a solid, reassuring feel. There is an on/off switch which I like and a button for selecting one of the three inputs.

FX Audio DAC-X6 review - Prime Audio Reviews

I am going to present this in two parts. First part in this post is the usual set that you see from me. For the second part, since this DAC has S/PDIF input, I thought I use that on it, Topping D30 and Exasound E32 to run a full suite of measurements. This is made possible by my Audio Precision Analyzer controlling the source signal which is not (easily) possible using the USB port (newer versions of AP support PC control but only using ASIO and not WASAPI). To make sure the data is not overwhelming, I will put these extra measurements in follow on posts. In this review, I’ll be taking a look at the DAC-X6 and seeing how it performs with relatively low power headphones, being Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros at 80 Ohms, which are enough to warrant the use of an amp. I won’t be including detailed diagrams and graphs, which you can find here, but will be reviewing based on my opinion of sound quality, build, aesthetics and various other factors. Customers are to bear the consequences and fees incurred, if the parcel was undelivered due to any of the following situation: Reliability was excellent under Roon without any failures using default settings. The only downfall it had was ignoring the volume control level in Roon. So if you rely on that for your volume level for your system, i.e. have no pre-amp, then you can't use this DAC. Hopefully this is a firmware limitation and can be fixed. Layering is good and the sound-stage is respectably wide, but the upfront presentation doesn’t convey much depth. That’s perfectly fine in my book as no device near this price can’t really do much stage depth either.Compare X6’s line-outs to something like Topping E30 and the latter shows a bit more tone richness and subtlety. DAC X6 is a bit rough around the edges but not that far behind really. Yeah; this is a mains powered amp (rather than usb, or battery), that's one of the factors why I chose it. This is surely the (most) correct category. There are two analog outputs, one line level that is fixed and the other, on the front going through a headphone amplification stage. The knob controls the level of headphone output.

FX-Audio DAC-X6 Review – The Nerdy Student

By the way Marantz stopped designing DAC’s after the HD-DAC 1 I think because they know it’s no use designing something around DAC chips who look extremely good on paper but color the sound to stand out in the market. The High Res audio thing is just marketing. To compoare it with visual technology the latest DAC’s it’s like designing a monitor not only with RGB colors but also ultraviolet light. It’s useless. You can’t see it but it hurts your eyes. Same with the latest DAC’s…. When I switched to the E10k and activated the bass boost switch the E10k actually did give more oomph and bass to the headphones. (For example explosions in games)

My Hopes Were Dashed - Kia Niro EV

Could I immediately hear a difference going from onboard audio to the DAC-X6? Honestly, I couldn’t. I felt like I wasted my money… I will be using this unit on my other PC so I am ok with keeping it. I will update and/or give a more lengthy review in the future..
