Fire Emblem Engage is a God tier SRPG for that ludicrously enjoyable and refined combat, which is what a good SRPG should be about in my mind. The strategic combat is aces, the maps are finely tuned, and the unorthodox emblem ring/bracelet implementation, which offered innovative combat possibilities that ended up being better than I initially thought it would be. Beautiful art and OST and a few character stand outs are just the cherry on top of a delicious gameplay sundae. As a SRPG fanatic, it's become my favorite of all time. This was a surprise SRPG indie for me, cos being based on the French revolution is an odd, but fun choice that worked. Its one of the only indies that actually really took time to refine it's combat and was a genuine blast to play, which was like a left hook out of nowhere, cos most indies haven't captivated me the way it did. The character art portraits are beautiful and stunning. The game clearly had a lot of love put into it. If I can be candid, BotM needs more awareness.

One of the striking aspects of the game is its luminous and colour-rich world design with lots of distinct biomes and architectures to see. After each fight, you can revisit the remnants of your battle too, adding a tiny bit of in-universe consistency to your past actions. Despite that, the chapter-based story of this game makes absolutely no sense. If you care about a naturalistic and realistic narrative, you should avoid this game at all costs and maybe get something like Hogwarts Legacy instead - similarly magical yet at least a bit more believably written. The repetitive feeling of the combat at times is also a downside and goes against the "let's just play a bit more" feeling of the previous titles. At the very least, the side characters and their interactions are somewhat entertaining.
