Description

The energetic particle detector JEDI will measure the angular distribution and the velocity vector of ions and electrons at high energy (ions between 20 keV and 1 MeV, electrons from 40 to 500 keV) present in the polar magnetosphere of Jupiter. Other instruments aboard Juno will gather data about its gravitational field and polar magnetosphere.

It was launched on 14 April 2023 and, after a series of flybys in the inner Solar System, arrives in Jupiter in 2031. Due to the immense size of the Jupiter system and the relative closeness of the Jovian system to Earth in comparison to the closeness of Pluto to Earth, New Horizons sent back more data to Earth from the Jupiter encounter than the Pluto encounter. The Atlas V (AV-029) used a Russian-built RD-180 main engine, powered by kerosene and liquid oxygen.Four largest moons of Jupiter Montage of Jupiter's four Galilean moons, in a composite image depicting part of Jupiter and their relative sizes (positions are illustrative, not actual). In Io the heating is so extreme that all the rock has melted and water has long ago boiled out into space. The probe's cameras measured volcanoes on Io, studied all four Galilean moons in detail, and made long-distance studies of the outer moons Himalia and Elara.

The King of France reportedly quipped that the astronomers had taken more territory from him than his enemies.

The faint rings of Jupiter are likely the result of minor meteor strikes on the many moons of Jupiter. Measure the orbital frame-dragging, known also as Lense–Thirring precession caused by the angular momentum of Jupiter, [68] [69] and possibly a new test of general relativity effects connected with the Jovian rotation. However, the Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO), NASA's contribution, was considered by the Planetary Decadal Survey to be too expensive. Although not proven, data from the Galileo orbiter indicates that Io might have its own magnetic field. The solar panels will remain in sunlight continuously from launch through the end of the mission, except for short periods during the operation of the main engine and eclipses by Jupiter.
