Again great review Holy and Sroyon , thanks for starting my morning with this thought provoking review. The book provides fascinating insight into the selection process and is accompanied by revealing anecdotes from the photographers.

contact sheets, representing 69 photographers, are featured, as well as zoom-in details, selected photographs, press cards, notebooks and spreads from contemporary publications, including Life magazine and Picture Post. Little did I realise at the time that they would also be useful for scanning old negs onto a computer! I've personally had no trouble with it (though it seemed generally stiff at first) - it does appear to open a little better with more-use, like most books. Depending on the book, I will usually put markers in, perhaps in pencil or, in the case of glossy pages like this, little post-it markers.

I’ve mentioned before how, for me, the photographers’ reflections add immeasurably to the value of book. No longer an active working tool for most photographers, the contact sheet is relegated to the archive, of interest as a historic document.

The contact sheet shows a series of 5 or 6 photos on the same roll with the Teddy Boy at various stages of carrying out this action.I think I have got more out of these reflections, and from careful perusal of the contact sheets, than I have from many technical books about photography. If you are sitting on the fence about purchasing this book, or picking it off the shelf, like me, I heartily recommend you do. Newly re-formatted and with 16 extra pages, this publication features superb reproductions of more than 130 contact sheets and over 200 photographs taken from the sheets, bearing witness to the creative methods, strategies and editing processes used by many of the acknowledged greats of photography. The photographs themselves are reproduced beautifully, and the paper quality does seem top-of-the-range.
