I almost feel it would be better to begin the story with no explanation as to why a boy and 66 pugs are left stranded in the arctic. It is a gripping adventure story set in an inspired fantasy world, where moving cities trawl the globe. Pugs of the Frozen North” is written so well that adults can enjoy the story and not find it cloying or juvenile. an engaging story for children (and, in my case at least, adults) who have the ability to read alone but aren't yet ready to give up the pleasure of heavily illustrated books.

It has an interesting story with a lot of adventures and some life lessons on how important it is to help each other. Part 2: Draw a curvy track (two parallel lines) connecting the two points, to form a game board race course. Have each child decide what sort of creature (real or mythical) will pull their particular sled, and how many of these creatures they will need to pull their sled. Another word of caution is that a main characters grandfather dies, although this is very gently and beautifully written it may not be suitable for every child.McIntyre and Reeve must work incredibly closely on this since all pages are a delight to look at and read. Cabin boy Shen, cast adrift from his ship with 66 pug dogs, meets Sika who is desperate to take part in the race.

The story is packed full of jokes, characters and incident and the plentiful illustrations, with their suitably icy green palette, are equally delightful with lots of detail.Having read other books by Philip Reeve, my children were keen to review this latest – “Pugs of the Frozen North. Part 4: Create two paper markers with blu-tack on the back of each (possibly using a pug face from the How-to-Draw-a-Pug activity or a sled from the Great Race activity).

The class can decide together if each encounter means going forward or backward (and how many squares. Look at the pug endpapers in Pugs of the Frozen North and create your own endpapers, possibly using scans or photos of the pugs the children have drawn.Part 5: Discuss with the children how creating a board game is very much like plotting out a story: there's a beginning, and end, and events and setbacks that happen to the characters in the middle. He discovers the Po of Ice (not what it seems), and pledges to help Sika take her grandfather's sledge in a race to meet the Snowfather, who can grant wishes.
