Dry mouth can be caused by opioids, antidepressants, medicines for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy, and others. Common side effects happen in more than 1 in 100 people. They're usually mild and do not last long.

Mouth ulcers are common and should clear up on their own within a week or 2. But see a GP or dentist if you have a mouth ulcer that lasts longer than 3 weeks. How you can treat mouth ulcers yourself About one in seven babies develop oral thrush during childhood. It's most common when they are under 12 weeks old.

You can use treatments like Dermol lotion as both a body wash (soap substitute) and moisturising skin lotion. We mention that this treatment option is best for those with patience because the tablets can be incredibly difficult to keep in place on your mouth ulcer, plus they take a long time to dissolve. If your mouth ulcer is in an awkward place, you’ll probably want to sit quietly with a mirror nearby so you can be sure the tablet is dissolving in the right place! However, the faff will be worth it because they are extremely efficient at clearing up mouth ulcers.

We think the Difflam rinse is one of the most effective ways to numb your whole mouth and can be particularly useful if you’re unfortunate enough to have developed multiple ulcers. Use the rinse after eating and drinking for longevity of numbness. Mouth (oral) problems are common in palliative care. They can have a negative impact on someone's quality of life, both physically and emotionally. Mouth care should be part of daily routine care for all patients. There are no common side effects with chlorhexidine skin treatments. However, in rare cases, some people may get red, itchy or irritated skin. It may be because you are using too much lotion or cream where you have folds or creases in your skin, such as around your groin. If you have been prescribed chlorhexidine and forget to take it or apply it on a regular basis, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for other ways to remember your medicine. What if I use too much? Give mouth care when the patient is semi-upright, to avoid choking. If that’s not possible, make sure fluid isn’t building up in their mouth as you give mouth care.If you buy a chlorhexidine treatment in a pharmacy or supermarket, follow the instructions that come with it. For prescription medicines, follow the advice from your doctor, dentist or a pharmacist. Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before having something to eat or drink. Dosage and how to use mouth spray If you forget to use your chlorhexidine skin treatment, that’s okay. Just start your routine again after the missed treatment and carry on as before. Like other medicines, this gel may cause some side effects. If this happens to you, stop using the gel. Make sure you see your GP if you don't see any improvement after using the oral gel for one week, if your oral thrush is severe or if you have pain when swallowing.

Step 01: Apply a pea-sized amount of the gel around the inside of your mouth covering the cheeks, gums and the roof of your mouth. Massage the gel fully in. You have been told by your doctor that you have difficulty converting a component of your blood called methaemoglobin to haemoglobin. Please don’t be worried. Most people taking this medicine will not experience any problems. If your baby is having difficulty feeding, or appears uncomfortable with signs of thrush, they may need some simple treatment. It's generally thought to be OK to use chlorhexidine lozenges or sore throat spray. There's very little information on safety in pregnancy, however, they are not thought to be harmful. Chlorhexidine and breastfeeding If the patient is conscious, moisten their mouth every 30 minutes with water from a spray or dropper, or by placing ice chips in their mouth. If the patient is unconscious, use a spray, dropper or ice chips every hour.Also contains:Purified Water, Pregelatinised Potato Starch, Ethanol, Polysorbate 20 (E432), Sodium Saccharin, Cocoa flavour, Orange flavour, Glycerol. A dietician if the patient's not eating or drinking enough, or if they're experiencing changes in taste. All patients should have basic mouth care every day.Good mouth care in someone’s last days and hours can help to keep them comfortable. Encourage patients to do as much as they can by themselves. Carers and family members can also help. You can rinse or gargle with 15ml of the Difflam every 1 ½ – 3 hours as needed. There’s a little measuring cup provided, so you can measure out the correct amount of liquid. The rinse isn’t recommended for use for more than seven days, and make sure you don’t swallow after rinsing – apart from anything else, we wouldn’t recommend the taste! If you cannot use it at a different time, then rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after brushing your teeth. Wait at least 5 minutes before using chlorhexidine.
