Apart from providing a lovely distraction to both character and reader, this detail is just the sort of thing a child like Dave would remember. In the meantime, have a look at our fabulous Create tool which will give you access to a wide range of illustrations and templates. The next day Dave and his family go to the school fair where Dave sees Dogger on sale for 5p, but he doesn't have enough money and is left heart broken when Dogger is bought by a little girl. A truly outstanding story which I have shared with my own children, with many children I have taught , and now with my grandchildren.

The summer fete features many activities that were common place when i was at school but when i recently read this story to a small group of year 1 children I found myself having to explain many of the activities that are illustrated. Voted the public's favourite CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal winner, this is a tale to which all children and their parents can relate, brought to life by Olivia Colman's heartwarming reading. Dogger, which was first published in 1977 and is about a little boy who loses his stuffed dog toy, went on to win her the Kate Greenaway Medal. If represented by animals, the female animals will have heavier eyelashes, redder lips or a bow on their head. Kirkus Reviews found that "The loss and retrieval of a favorite toy animal is agreeably handled" and "Pleasant, if unoriginal—as usual, Hughes' rumpled tots and general clutter make you feel instantly at home. This story is a great read to share with those children of the EYFS/ early KS1, as it highlights the importance of respecting belongings and of respecting the belongings of others. Dave and Bella look on as they see the little girl who bought Dave’s beloved Dogger - negotiations ensue and eventually Bella offers the little girl her big brand new bear in exchange for Dave’s Dogger. The story has a good complication and climax then in the end, as you would hope from a book of this nature aimed at this age group, things all work out in the end. Give the children some inspiration for their own creative writing tasks with these illustrated word cards and ask them to consider what they liked and disliked about the story with this Story Review Writing Frame .

Dogger is for sale for 5p, but Dave can only find 3p in his pocket, and is very upset when he sees a little girl walking around the Fayre with Dogger in her arms. This title gave me such a warm feeling of nostalgia, whilst one of the children dressed up as a Dalek during the school fair exemplifies the quintessential British charm of Hughes timeless tale. Shirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for Dogger in 1977 and for Ella's Big Chance in 2003. This handy set of colouring sheets gives your children the opportunity to practise their colouring and fine motor skills, as well as giving them something lovely to take home with them or put up on display. When the book was finished, I was told it was too English to be popular abroad, however, it proved to be my big breakthrough and has been published in many different languages all over the world. Inside this lovely collection of Dogger story resources, you’ll find everything you need to add some magic to your display walls, reinforce story vocabulary and even role-play the story with your class. His big sister comes to the rescue and swaps a giant teddy for her brothers Dogger, making Dave a very very happy little boy.

Her early work included illustrations for Dorothy Edwards' My Naughty Little Sister, with the first picture book she created being Lucy And Tom's Day in 1960. She wrote two novels for older children, Hero on a Bicycle, about a 13-year-old Italian boy during the occupation of Florence, and Whistling in the Dark, set during the Liverpool Blitz. I love the illustration where Dad is out in the garden with a torch and Bella and mum stand by the door while dave looks forlornly out of his bedroom window. If they're not quite what you were looking for then please do let me know and I'll be happy to take another look for you!Such kindness, warmth, love, humour and grace, radiating in such glowing detail from every page, for decade after decade of tireless service to children and their futures.

In 'Dogger' i could relate both to Dave and his love for dogger and Bella being the kind older sister - I wasn't always kind, but i was an older sister.
