Keyboard workstations: just a lust for old-school tools? Or a bedroom musician’s new best friend? We think Roland’s new Fantom-08 synthesizer is the latter. Gear forums are full of seasoned enthusiasts bemoaning ‘today’s kids and their plugins’ but can you blame them when high-quality hardware costs so much? I'm a big fan of multitimbral effects and, if I want to chorus my Strat patch while torturing a lead synth, at the same time playing an organ through a rotary-speaker effect and gating my snare drum, I expect modern instruments to allow me to do so. The effects structures of earlier generations of Roland workstations were, for the most part, rather limiting, and certainly inferior to the larger and more flexible architectures of (for example) the Korg Trinity and OASYS. Happily, each of the Parts (a Tone in a slot) in a Studio Set now has its own MFX effects unit and three-band EQ, while a Drum Part can have an MFX/EQ combination or up to six compressor/EQ pairs. Following these, there's a global chorus and reverb, your choice of an IFX (insert effect) or a master compressor, then a master EQ and, finally, a TFX (total effect). It would be nice to have multiple MFX slots per Part — you'll find yourself wanting to chorus, delay and overdrive that Strat sound — but, at this price, the FA08's architecture is more than passable. A new microscope view in the pattern sequencer gives you detailed control over your composition and now you can also draw parameter automation within the pattern piano roll editor too. Convert SoundFont SF2 Multi-samples and use within the Fantom Activate or enable the FANTOM-06/07/08 in your music software. You may need to consult with the documentation for your specific application for this, but usually there is a preferences menu where you will need to enable the FANTOM-06/07/08 so it can be used by your software.This will allow you to transfer both MIDI and Audio data between the FANTOM-06/07/08 and your computer. On a PC, open the Device Manager and confirm that the FANTOM-06/07/08 is listed under "Sound, video, and game controllers."
