All this is overseen by a collection of small people, the Oompa Loompas, whose poetic verses are as exciting as their appearance. It is not a real-world chocolate factory like the one that once offered tours in Hershey, Pennsylvania; rather, it is a vast underground complex, where one travels by boat down a river of chocolate, from the Chocolate Room to the Inventing Room to the Nut Room to the Television-Chocolate Room – or can travel even faster, in all directions, via a Great Glass Elevator! It's a children's story that also steps outside children's and people aren't used to seeing Dahl in that way.

On March 5, 2020, Variety announced that Taika Waititi was partnering with Netflix on a pair of animated series — one based on the world of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and another based on the Oompa-Loompa characters. Wonka assures her (after making a brief joke where he claims that headmasters are one of the occasional ingredients) that it is only laughter. Wonka explains that the whole tour was designed to help him find a worthy heir to his business, and Charlie was the only child whose inherent genuineness passed the test. As Charlie and the Chocolate Factory begins, Charlie and his family – his mother and father and his four grandparents, all of whom live together under one roof – are facing dire circumstances.

Many were originally written for American magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, Harper's, Playboy and The New Yorker, then subsequently collected by Dahl into anthologies, gaining world-wide acclaim. Cameron trying to read Little Women, or Robinson Crusoe for that matter, to a class of today's children.

I have watched both the movie versions of this book, one (Johnny Depp's version) more times than the other (Gene Wilder's version) and I have to say that it is Tim Burton's movie that really stays true to the book and adds a little bit extra to it by showing a bit of Willy Wonka's past as a child. Willy Wonka, the owner of the chocolate factory, a man who makes Charles Montgomery Burns look reasonable, holds a competition to allow a small number of children into his factory to select one of them to be his successor. But I'm having the time of my life reading classic children's book out loud and feeling young again. and almost always featuring musical numbers by all the main characters (Wonka, Charlie, Grandpa Joe, Violet, Veruca, etc. Their situation, in short – while exaggerated and stylized – is not too much unlike what might have faced quite a few British households in those days of the 1960’s, when changes in the British economy left some families behind, particularly in the country’s older industrial cities. A video game, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, based on Burton's adaptation, was released on 11 July 2005. Anything I can say about this book is true for the majority of Roal Dahl's work I read so far: magical, twisted, whimsical, imaginative and full of characters of questioning morals!

The cover photo of the 50th anniversary edition, published by Penguin Modern Classics for sale in the UK and aimed at the adult market, received widespread commentary and criticism. On November 27, 2018, Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company jointly announced that Netflix would be extending the Roald Dahl universe of stories for global family audiences with an exclusive new slate of original animated event series, based on the books from the acclaimed and award-winning author’s best-selling library, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, and many other beloved titles.Spotty Powder looks and tastes like sugar, but causes bright red pox-like spots to appear on faces and necks five seconds after ingestion, so children who eat Spotty Powder do not have to go to school. He insists on going into the chocolate factory with Charlie, and helps Charlie through the often hair-raising adventures that occur there. FYI - Wrote this review ~2017 from memory as I want to have a review for everything I remember reading.

One cannot criticize Dahl's work without upsetting a generation or two of readers, in its simplicity and complex themes offered up simultaneously.Douglas Hodge, who played Willy Wonka in the London production of the stage musical, [74] narrated the UK Edition of the audiobook for Penguin Audio in 2013 ( ISBN 978-0141370293), and the title was later released on Audible. However, as I said before, this is still a great book and one that any parent should read to their kids to encourage a vivid imagination. My favorite part was the actual tour and reading about all the crazy thing that Wonka had hidden in his factory. Five Golden Tickets wrapped in his scrumptious chocolate bars will get them a tour of the fabulous building , secrets inside never revealed to the public and a lifetime supply.
