The online application process will be open for each exam from 0900 on the exam opening date to 1700 on the exam closing date (see dates and fees in the section above). Imperial Novice Course - February/March 2021 course

In addition to specific knowledge-based competences, examination material may be developed from guidance or recommendations published by healthcare organisations such as the RCoA, AAGBI, NCEPOD, NICE, SIGN, NPSA, CEMACH. A three hour examination with a structured format in which candidates provide a written responseto 12 constructed response questions. From September 2023, the Final FRCA MCQ exam will comprise 90 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions in three hours. The Final FRCA Written examination is a summative assessment, blueprinted to Stage 1 and 2 training curriculums. The examination assesses the knowledge required of an anaesthetist in training at the end of Stage 2 training in anaesthetics. The CRQ examination complements the MCQ paper, and whilst both parts test factual knowledge and understanding, the CRQ assesses judgment and the ability to prioritise information. The Written examination forms a gateway to the Final FRCA SOE, which assesses application of this knowledge.

A candidate who has failed any of the following examination components more than oncemay request a guidance interview. Guidance is limited to one interviewper examination component. Final examinations are aligned to the core and intermediate levels of the UK anaesthetic training curriculum. The questions used in the examinations are tagged to the FRCA Primary and Final examinations syllabuses. Passing the Final examination allows candidates to progress to high level training. Successful completion means that candidates become Fellows of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and can use the letters FRCA after their name. Preparing for the Final FRCA exams Each SBA question has a stem or vignette, a lead in question and five plausible options. Fees cannot be deferred from one exam to another and candidates must prove their eligibility for each exam sitting they apply for. Candidates sitting the Primary and Final FRCA Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) exams are provided with comprehensive breakdown of their question performance against the areas of the curriculum tested in the exam.This allows trainees and trainers to identify shortfalls of knowledge in the relevant areas of the exam syllabus, so that focussed preparation can be put in place prior to the next attempt. Where a pass result is achieved, it willprovide trainees withimportant information on which to base further continuing professional development.

SOE 1 contains parts A and B, which are taken consecutively. Each part comprises two clinical short cases, each with a linked clinical science question. The clinical science question may come before or after the clinical short case. CRQquestions are designed to assess a candidate's ability to think critically and prioritise information. This is assessed in the way the questions are answered and marked.
