Unfortunately the gig never took place, although I did meet Ian Stuart at a number of NF activities and also on nights out in the Angel pub in Islington. As they say, the rest is history!

Across the evening the audience was entertained by a number of British bands including, ‘Crucified’, ‘London Breed’, with a nostalgic set from the lead singer of the ‘Ovalteenies’, the headline set being provided by the excellent ‘Whitelaw’. The memory of Ian Stuart was marked in the customary fashion with all the due dignity and ritual associated with the ISD events of previous years. Several of the other band members have criminal convictions due to their association with the Stomper Crew, another violent Quebec-based extreme right skinhead gang. PROFITING FROM HATE Talland, who runs a building company from his Waltham Abbey home, makes a pretty penny out of the ISD gig. In arranging the annual event, he rents out the stage and PA system to Blood and Honour and has exclusive rights to sell alcohol and merchandise. At last year’s ISD gig, he proved 20 barrels of beer and 4,000 cans of lager at a 600% mark up. His son, Steve, also runs the largest merchandising stall, selling hundreds of CDs, T-shirts, and books. However, John “Grinny” Grinton later stated in an interview that he had no problem with the new Skrewdriver and that he became a member of the National Front along with Donaldson. Despite all the efforts of a rag-bag of cultural Marxists and self-styled ‘anti-fascists’, the ISD gig was successfully held in an excellent venue in this North-East city, and the event was not disrupted or hindered by those hostile elements. When asked about his attitude towards SHARP, RASH and political correctness, he replied: “Nothing to do with them…SEARCH AND DESTROY!!!” Skrewdriver was instrumental in setting up Blood and Honour, a network of bands promoting militant neo-Nazi ideas through music and concerts. Crane died of an Aids-related illness just two months after Donaldson was killed in a car crash, both aged 36. A couple of lads with multi-coloured Mohican haircuts (ok, Mohawks if you want to be factual!) began selling NF News with us every Saturday morning at our spot in Leeds City Centre, much to the dismay and anger of the reds. Not the ideal NS look admittedly, but I’m sure those lads now have ‘normal’ lives, with families and a mortgage. And normal haircuts!

The memoir No Retreat confesses how he was constantly targeted. “The event that seemed to give Stuart the real horrors was when he went out early one morning to buy a newpaper and a pint of milk and was hit across the head by a large mancunian wielding a Lucozade bottle.” The reformed Skrewdriver eventually became openly supportive of far right-wing groups, after a period of denying such claims. Donaldson eventually described himself as a neo-Nazi, saying: “I would describe myself as a British National Socialist, not a German one, and so don’t think I’m at odds with British patriots.” In the UK Blood and Honour regularly hosts secret festivals several times a year, the largest is Donaldson’s memorial each September.

Skrewdriver gigs were regularly the scenes of violent clashes, with their 1992 planned London concert becoming the “battle of Waterloo”, with hundreds of skinheads and anti-fascists fighting running battles on the streets. GAZA – The Conflict in the Middle East – Are these the opening shots of a new war in the Middle East?British Movement was well represented at this event, both in terms of the audience and the bands, with the customary involvement of BM in the various roles ensuring that the function passed smoothly and also providing an opportunity to sell BM merchandise and to catch up with comrades from across the UK. Last year saw hundreds of skinheads gather at a field near Northampton. It is expected that as many as 5,000 neo-Nazi sympathisers could make the trip this weekend for the secret 20th anniversary event in Upper Heyford. Pearce found religion and rejected extremism, moving to the US to become an academic, but claims that when he last saw Donaldson in 1992 he had become “worn out” from constant street-battles and infighting within the movement. ‘Anti-Fascist Action’ I was having a quiet drink… 15 of them came storming in, they had baseball bats. They tried to smash my elbows and knees. At the time I was an activist with the National Front in Leeds and we had already dipped our toe into the water by printing the Punk Front zine, a tatty newsletter which was aimed at supporters who were into punk but not yet active. The brainchild of Eddy Morrison, it was probably the first attempt by any modern racial Nationalist organisation to involve itself in the alternative music scene.
