Description

I loved how this book can be a little sad and frightening in parts, especially with the way the children are treated and how they can never fully escape their past. Milou is waiting for her birth family to reclaim her, and is perfecting the art of appearing unadoptable. It's important to remember there are plenty of people who see that our differences are what makes the world an interesting place; these are the people we should listen to. There, he witnesses fellow inmate Tippy Tinkletrousers (aka Professor Poopypants) escape in a giant Robo-Suit (later reduced to time-traveling trousers). Milou, Lotta, Sem, Fenna and Egbert (more affectionately known as Egg) have grown into very distinguished and precocious individuals.

and one of the most satisfying endings I've read in a long while, with the promise of more in the epilogue.Lotta, Egbert, Fenna, Sem and Milou refuse to believe what Gassbeek says about them and instead they champion each other. Unfolding with the clarity of a fairy tale, this sure-footed debut casts a delightfully spooky spell. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. I knew I needed something/someone new when the orphans arrive at Poppenmill, but for a long while I couldn’t work out what/who exactly.

Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. When I first began writing this story, several people told me that five main characters were too many and that I should consider having three or four at most. Luckily for the Unadoptables, Milou senses foul play and persuades her friends to flee as far from Rotman and the Little Tulip as they can. You do not understand the emotion or the suffering or the turmoil of what it is like to grow up like this. Meneer Rotman didn't count on the children being so inventive and resourceful, as they settle into their new life in an old abandoned windmill, once owned by Bram Poppenmaker, the maker of Milou's cat puppet.

Edda completely transformed the story, not just in terms of plot but the effect she had on the orphans’ vividness, especially Milou and Lotta. Sem climbed in and Milou followed quickly behind, careful to keep her eyes only on the round bucket, ignoring the height and the biting wind that stabbed like an icy dagger at her exposed skin. All the Enid Blyton books that my extended family had could not satisfy my curiosity and yearning to explore through those pages. Although a lot of people were really welcoming, there were many who weren’t and (like Fenna) I ended up becoming a selective mute* from the age of 12, right up into adulthood.

Going back to the point I made earlier - that writing is rewriting - it took so many drafts to get it right, a lot of revising to make sure the twists and revelations landed correctly. Lotta’s coat billowed out around her as she slid down the rope and glided over the canal like some sort of nightmarish wraith. When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival.
