Some were spluttering over their tea at what seemed to be yet another undermining of war heroes, not least Douglas Bader, and others were rejoicing at another nail in the coffin of our imperial history. In adding so much more colour to the story Colditz, Macintyre does not forget that at heart this was a prisoner of war camp, many of whose inmates were dedicated to continuing the war by other means, of which escaping was the regarded as the best. At the top were the Prominente, prisoners whom the Germans thought were supremely important, such as Churchill’s nephew Giles Romilly, members of the aristocracy, and cousins of the royal family.

One of only a handful who did was Airey Neave, later a leading Tory politician and supporter of Margaret Thatcher. Macintyre's latest work is a departure from the basic historical narrative that is the more familiar telling of the story of Oflag IVC, Colditz Castle. Colditz Castle was used as a Nazi prison for Allied POWs, but not just your run-of-the-mill soldiers.

Names are omitted that are identified elsewhere; like the majority of the tunnels under the place, leads are opened that end up nowhere or just simply dead-ended. There was also the crushing boredom of a daily ritual that remained the same month in, month out; year in, year out. THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER’A master at setting the pulse racing’ Daily Mail’A fine feat of storytelling . During 1504, the servant Clemens the baker accidentally set Colditz afire, and the town hall, church, castle and a large part of the town was burned. Soon thereafter the castle became an administrative office for the Office of Colditz and a hunting lodge.

Some turn out to have feet of clay or to be just unpleasant, many fit easily into the 1950s jolly good chaps stereotype, while others, little known till now, turn out to deserve much more recognition for their conduct and achievements. The castle was home to several notable figures during its time as a mental institution, including Ludwig Schumann, the second youngest son of the famous composer Robert Schumann, and Ernst Baumgarten [ de], one of the original inventors of the airship. He also shows the members of the all-male prison community, whether prisoners or guards, with all their prejudices of the time whether social, political or racial. And unlike conventional prison sentences, no one in a POW camp knew how long they would be incarcerated for, or what the endgame would be. They give us the heroes we crave and the sense of adventure that is so often missing from our own lives.

The story of the lived experience of prisoners and guards is powerful stuff, but it needs to be told well to make that power tangible and moving for the reader. Notice to Internet Explorer users Server security: Please note Internet Explorer users with versions 9 and 10 now need to enable TLS 1.

It was interesting to see how the atmosphere and administration of Colditz transformed throughout the war, especially toward the end when it became apparent that Germany was losing. The castle thus functioned as a hospital during a long period of massive change in Germany, from slightly after the Napoleonic Wars destroyed the Holy Roman Empire and created the German Confederation, throughout the lifespan of the North German Confederation, the complete reign of the German Empire, throughout the First World War, and until the beginnings of the Weimar Republic. The world would have been a much better place if the ingenuity and cunning of the inmates had been put to use during a peaceful era.
