Description

The camera is equipped with a high-magnification 3.69-million-dot EVF with 0.8x magnification. Compared to the previous model, the viewfinder has improved suppression of parallax and distortion, which typically occurs when an eye position becomes displaced while using the viewfinder, for stellar visibility. X-T5 supports F-Log2, which records an expanded dynamic range of 13+ stops. This range is wider than current F-Log, broadening post-production potential. Let’s start with the interval timer, which automatically captures one to 999 or indeed infinite images until you stop it, at intervals of one second to 24 hours.

For clips with movement, the X-T5 doesn't tend to fight against smooth pans, which its predecessor was somewhat prone to do. But a sudden jerk of the camera can certainly throw it off. Similarly, motions like walking or running with the camera are just a bit too much for the X-T5's IS system to handle. Video AF

There are three factors I consider when assessing image quality, resolution, dynamic range and noise. Video mode also adds stirring correction to DIS, with a new processor function that effectively corrects ‘blurring,’ which tends to occur in fixed-point shooting with wide-angle lenses. Topping off video stabilisation improvements is a more powerful IS mode boost, which is ideal when shooting walking shots, offering enhanced correction for run-and-gun movie scenarios. Extensive lens ecosystem The X-T5 has a higher resolution 3.68M-dot electronic viewfinder with greater 0.80x magnification, but a slower 100fps refresh rate. LCD Screen Performance enhancement achieved in the X-T5 include improved image quality, ISO125 as a standard sensitivity, the fastest shutter speed of 1/180000 sec, and the use of Pixel Shift Multi-Shot to expand photographic variations. Other features include the Smooth Skin Effect, Subject Detection AF capable of detecting animals and birds, and AI-based high-precision auto white balance, assisting users in producing high quality photographic images.

When shooting for archival recording and other commercial applications where colour fidelity and fine detail are paramount, you’ll experience exceptionally accurate colour with virtually non-existent false colours and moiré. Best ever viewfinder performance If that’s not enough for you the XT5 also features Pixel Shift Multi-Shot, which uses the camera’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) mechanism to shift the image sensor with precision, to shoot 20 images that can be combined to create a final 160mp image for the ultimate in image quality. In practice this feature is not always relevant to landscape photography where grass and foliage might be moving between frames resulting in a blurring in the image. However, for architecture this is a great feature. Yes, if you want the best image quality from an APSC sensor, have the ability to crop your images but still print big or simply prefer the 3 way tilt screen and the other enhancements. Perhaps not if your images are mostly viewed digitally Ghosting artefacts are still present in the 160MP version, but less intense and spread out over a larger area. The sea is rendered more convincingly, at least. You might be wondering why you'd buy the Fujifilm X-T5 over the X-H2 – as they both share the same sensor and processor. What’s the difference? There's a major ergonomic difference between the two cameras, as the X-H2 has a mode dial while the X-T5 has a shutter dial.

Fujifilm X-T5: Viewfinder and screen

Fujifilm has been smart in clearly segmenting their X Series ranges. The XH cameras are their flagship range in terms of build quality, feature set and overall performance. If you shoot action or nature or if you are a videographer and prefer a slightly larger body, then the XH2s is the one for you. For Stills and Video with a high resolution sensor then it’s the XH2. But if you shoot Travel or Landscape where size and weight are important factors and don’t need the XH features then the XT series is the way to go. For Street photographers it’s the rangefinder style XPro, XE or X100 ranges. The Fujifilm X-T5 has a smaller native sensitivity range of ISO 125-12,800, which can be expanded down to ISO 64 and up to ISO 51,200. Video

The new sensor (which also features in the XH2) has a resolution of 7728 x 5152 pixels versus the 26mp XT4. This means you will be able to produce prints, @250dpi, that are 31” along the longest edge without any upscaling. Cramming 40mp into an APSC sized sensor, without compromising image quality, is no mean feat. To put that in context, the XT5’s pixel density on a Full Frame would result in a 90mp sensor and on a GFX it’s almost 160mp.

And while slowing the mechanical burst to 10fps effectively gave me unlimited JPEG bursts, I could still only capture 20 uncompressed RAW files at this speed before the camera slowed. In contrast the X-H2 captured 136 uncompressed RAWs at 15 fps using a CF Express card or 68 with SD. RAW files are available in uncompressed, lossless compressed or lossy compressed formats, and you can also choose whether to record standard images in JPEG or HEIF formats. The X-T5 uses the same NP-W235 batteries as its predecessor. It's a 16Wh unit that powers the camera to a rating of 590 shots per charge using the viewfinder or 580 shots using the rear screen. These numbers drop to 500 and 570 shots, respectively, if you use Boost mode to up the refresh rate of the finder to 100fps or the rear screen to 60fps. The X-T5 features the special Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode, which combines 20 separate images to create a single 160 megapixel RAW file for the ultimate quality when detail really matters. There are camera upgrades and excuses for camera upgrades. However, the launch of the Fujifilm XT5 represents, in my view, the biggest leap in XT technology since the upgrade from the XT1 to the XT2.

Summary

If you are considering moving to Fujifilm from another system there are two things, apart from the IQ, that will captivate you. The legendary Fujifilm colour science and the intuitive, user friendly, ergonomics of the camera layout and menu’s. I see all systems on my workshops and I can tell you there is no better camera to shoot with. The screen articulation has always been a bone of contention for Fujifilm owners. Some prefer the speed and discretion of a simple vertical tilt, whether they’re shooting stills or filming video behind the camera, while the side angle option does at least allow more comfortable shooting at unusual angles in the portrait orientation.
