The violence in the middle part of the book got to the point that I had to take a little break, especially when I liked some of the characters that were getting killed. Even when the sun rose above the low bluffs to the south, a layer of light lingered for a bit at the level of the chaparral, as if independent of its source. The plot itself is wide-ranging, with several disconnected storylines gradually merging into climatic moments). Among many other accolades, in 2006 he was the co-winner of both the Best Screenplay Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Brokeback Mountain.

A television miniseries adaptation produced by Motown Productions was broadcast on CBS in 1989, starring Robert Duvall as Augustus McCrae and Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow F. In Lonesome Dove the two ex-Rangers put together a Company themselves for their epic task - seven members. Pea Eye (his real first name long forgotten) is not especially bright, but he is brave, reliable, and kind. Reminds me a bit of Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden (my all time favourite novel) and definitely up there with those two Steinbeck classics in terms of quality - a truly great American novel!

He teaches us instead how to live each day with joy, taking pleasure in the smallest things, and loving the smallest things so much that they become life’s very meaning. After a desperate crossing through the arid basins of Wyoming, the cattle drive arrives in Montana, which proves as lush and beautiful as Jake had described.

A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize— winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America. Besieged in a makeshift dugout in the bank of the Musselshell River for several days, Gus' wounds become infected, and his health declines. The novel explores themes of friendship, loyalty, love, and the pursuit of dreams, all against the backdrop of a changing and unforgiving frontier. His other works include two collections of essays, three memoirs, and more than thirty screenplays, including the coauthorship of Brokeback Mountain, for which he received an Academy Award. In Nebraska, he gives Gus' letters to Clara and Lorena, and explains that Gus has left his half of the cattle interests to Lorena.Their relationships and personal growth throughout the novel add depth and emotional resonance to the story.

When he finally found a clearing, he wouldn't leave it, and Pickles Gap came into being, mainly attracting travelers like its founder, which is to say people too weak-willed to be able to negotiate a few hundred miles of mesquite thicket without losing their nerve. At 750 pages in length, the novel is fast reading as I desired to see the resolution of this complex story that McMurtry has created. The tale seems to have a lot of Indian and wildlife threats – it felt like there were too many anonymous small groups of Indians (portrayed quite thinly in contrast to the cowboys) popping up to injure/kill a main character to poignant effect. The idea being to "open" and "settle" the land there with a few thousand head of cattle (these will be stolen from Mexico by the crew. It’s a very, very long novel about cowboys and set in the 1860’s - not a literary comfort zone for me!
