It could be useful for someone convalescing - they could put their phone, tv remote etc in the compartments, or even by chidren doing their homework. It's not totally rigid so won't hold heavy items, like a die cutter, but I'd use that on a table anyway. The lap desk provides a flat surface on which to work that can be positioned over your legs when sitting.
