Containing one bottle each of shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatment, this kit is made for those with natural hair and suffer from light thinning. I can’t say enough good things about the Nioxin hair care system. Not only does it smell great, it feels very invigorating on my scalp. Also since using this system, my hair doesn’t fall out half as much as it used to. And my curls look amazing. My hair feels so healthy and clean after as well.” In saying that, I can’t give you my full honest review without including some cons. Here we go! 1. It can get expensive Many people prefer to try Nioxin’s major competitor, Keranique, instead – as it’s sulfate-free. See my comparison post between the two for more. Panthenol: Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, is a humectant that helps to improve the moisture content of the hair and scalp. According to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science, topical application of panthenol can improve hair strength and reduce hair breakage.

Result: None. I thought it might have been working but realized it just hair grown longer, making it easier to style away the gaps. In fact, my scalp seems more visible than before. Ever since I was a baby, I was allergic to some of the microorganisms that are a part of every person’s skin biome. This allergy resulted in dandruff, starting at age 13. For decades, I tried so many shampoos, both prescription and OTC. Many of them kept the dandruff in control for about 2 days. But this shampoo was different. It eliminated my dandruff. It is a strong shampoo and my theory is that it was able to get under the layer of skin containing dead cells, thus allowing the cells to be rinsed away. My dandruff is gone, and does not recur, but my scalp still gets irritated due the allergy. But it is so nice not to deal any more with the dandruff component of the problem. And the company always seems to have a new, better version that you simply must test out. It’s also hard to keep up with the changes for different hair types: like Nioxin System 1 suddenly becomes Nioxin System 3. Which might become Nioxin System 4 a few months later. I used System 6 for a while before the products for color treated hair and progressive thinning split into different systems. Salesy, right? Definitely. But it actually delivers on these points in terms of treating men and women’s thinning hair. And even though I felt a little silly using something ‘designed to strengthen, nourish and repair thinning hair from its foundation’ when I had no hair at all, I soldiered on. And then I observed that the new product was distributed by Wella Haircare in CA and was made in Mexico; the former product was made by Nioxin Laboratories in Atlanta in the USA.But one treatment really made a difference – hence the reason for this Nioxin shampoo review. Welcome to Lady Alopecia’s thoughts on Nioxin Optional) Apply the Nioxin scalp treatment. Some Nioxin systems include a scalp treatment that is applied after shampooing and conditioning. This treatment is massaged into the scalp and left on without rinsing. Shampoo your hair with the Nioxin cleanser. Wet your hair and apply a small amount of the cleanser to your scalp. Massage gently with your fingertips, focusing on the scalp, and then work the lather through the length of your hair. Rinse thoroughly. Second of all, it’s a bit like buying Apple products – once you’re in, it’s hard to get out. You don’t want to keep using it forever but what happens if you stop?

Robin, I’m so sorry to hear about your experience. I totally get how scary it can be to see more come out…but as I mention in this post and in my other ones about Nioxin, this is a common side effect. It is simply what happens as your scalp gets used to a new formula and it will happen with many hair loss treatments. Initial shedding is actually a GOOD THING as it means your scalp is getting rid of the ‘dead hair’, creating a new environment for fresh hair to come through. THis shedding shouldn’t last any longer than 2 weeks of daily use. But if you’ve only tried it twice, I’m afraid the treatment isn’t really getting a fair chance! Note: I include some other products in this review, purely because I supplemented my shampoo with a conditioner and a scalp and hair treatment. Plus some more items within the Nioxin 3D Intensive Care range. (I went all out!) I’m talking about the hair shaft, of course. Shame on you.) The thing is, when you do have some hair to bare, Nioxin treats each follicle in a kinder way. For instance, the lightweight conditioner contains vital amino acids for moisture balance. This protects each hair strand against the damages of environmental stresses and reduces breakage.

Overall, Nioxin’s unique features, such as its scalp-focused approach, customized systems, scientifically proven ingredients, and multi-step approach, make it a popular choice for individuals looking to improve the health and appearance of their hair and scalp. How to Use Nioxin

Does Nioxin work? To put it quite simply—yes. According to the testimonials as of April 2023, a majority of customers have said that their products worked for them. Now, don’t get me wrong: searching for thinning hair solutions can get tiring. Expensive. And messy. One of the most frustrating things about alopecia is the feeling that you can’t do anything about it. And this stress might lead to more hair falling out. It’s a cruel circle that can cause alopecia sufferers to feel pretty helpless. That’s why I believe it’s important to take whatever measures you can to regain control. Because even if it’s just for the placebo effect, the sheer act of doing something about your alopecia can have a positive result. This System 2 collection features a shampoo for purifying, a conditioner for improving elasticity, and a leave-in treatment for additional nourishment. This set is most compatible with natural hair with progressed thinning. The formula contains ingredients such as peppermint oil, vitamins, botanicals, SPF 15 sunscreen, cysteine, and white tea extract. A recent review [7] describes how hair suffers photodamage when exposed to UV rays, such as degradation of hair proteins and discoloration. The use of sunscreen protects the hair cuticle and prevents photodamage. Hi Michele, thanks for sharing your experience and I’m really sorry for the delayed response! I’m also sorry to hear about your trouble with Nioxin…may I ask how long you used it for though? As this is quite a common side effect within the first 2 weeks, while your scalp gets used to the new formula. I’ve heard this anecdotally several times but for those who keep using it, there is a marked improvement after a couple of weeks! With Keranique, I don’t massively recommend it because a) apparantely, a lot of customers are scammed into an autoship programme (see my Keranique post for more) and b) it contians 2% minoxidil, which is quite harsh on the scalp. It has been proven to help hair growth…but actually, essential peppermint oil does the same thing with less side effects! I don’t promote the use of minoxidil myself because I’ve used it in the past and it gave me headaches, heart palpitations and dizzy spells. But I know lots of people do use it (for instance, it’s the main ingredient in Rogaine). For me, I prefer the more natural approach, which is why I like Nioxin…or for something even more chemical free, I’d highly recommend Revita – full post here.

Zinc pyrithione: Zinc pyrithione is an antifungal and antibacterial agent that helps to reduce scalp inflammation and promote a healthier scalp environment. According to a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, zinc pyrithione can help to reduce the severity of dandruff and improve scalp health. I’m so sorry to hear about your bad experience…I know it’s not exactly a nice thing to witness!! But rest assured, seeing more hair loss is completely natural for the first 2 weeks. It happened to me, too (small little curls of hair, all over my shower!) but then it settled down…and that was me using the full system every day. Nioxin say themselves that this is to be expected as your hair gets used to the new formula. I don’t want to advise you on anything you’re not comfortable doing, however my opinion is that 4 times isn’t really enough to get the benefits of using it. If you feel ok to proceed, you could use it every second day and on the alternates, use a very gentle shampoo. Have a look at some natural oils you could try too and even do a DIY hair mask every couple of nights. Always use your best judgement though…even though I think you’d need to use it at least 2 weeks continuously for the shedding to stop, I don’t want to force you into anything! Still, from my own research and my own use, I found Nioxin’s hair loss shampoo to be pretty effective. I used Nioxin hair care products long after the takeover in 2008 and they worked for me! The credibility of the hair loss treatment has also been called into question, with customers complaining that Nioxin changed its formula since P&G took over. (It now contains sodium laureth sulfate – find sulfate free options here). There are different kits available. And each purifying shampoo works in a different way, depending on your hair type, the extent of shedding or if you have colored hair. But you could start with a hair loss prevention shampoo, and maybe the Nioxin scalp therapy conditioner. Or try a trial-sized kit instead. Here is the brand’s own Nioxin Shampoo Review:
