On September 12th, 2021, redesigns of multiple renders as well as test bottles were discovered and reported on the Dew Drinker Discord. On July 21st, 2021, in a r/MountainDew Reddit post, a Reddit user named "aa1718293" posted about Spark being released in his local Speedway. This was the first confirmed sighting of Spark, with further sightings appearing after. Since then, it appeared with branding for "World of Warcraft" in 2009, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" in 2011, "Halo 4" in 2012, and "Every2Minutes in 2013," before being released as a permanent flavor in 2014. Even after that, the drink's bottle was changed several times for more promotional game tie-ins.

Spark is one of two Dew flavors to be permanent after a couple of limited time runs, not counting nationwide DEWmocracies. The only other Dew flavor to achieve this was LiveWire. As of this release, Spark is no longer exclusive to Speedway and available at most vendors.
