Was at my local off licence today in Northern Ireland looking for some festive beer and Alex Thomas, Sextons Master Distiller was there giving out samples. I drink whisky neat, do not like overproof (cask strength) find the extra % alcohol does not enhance flavor at all. I will also admit that I’m a snob when it comes to whiskey (and beer) but those of you who wrote bad reviews of THE SEXTON are taking it way too far. Yet still clinging to my over-reaching skepticism, I shared this find with the one person I knew who can out-do my single malt snobbery at the highest level: my father. It is relatively smooth, but it still delivers a nice fruity punch due to the sherry cask maturation, mainly evident in the finish.

This variety gets serious points for its distinctive, six-sided, squat bottle; but also for its master blender Alex Thomas, who is one of the only women working in the still-male-dominated Irish whiskey industry. For example, you couldn't have Diageo producing the Talisker range and then for the craic deciding to put out another Talisker distilled single malt under 'The Skye Whisky' brand. Bushmills, on the Irish north coast, claims to be the world’s oldest whiskey distillery, giving a sense of occasion to this variety. On the palate, the whiskey is very smooth, with the pronounced palate weight and oily viscosity typical of sherried whiskey. The Sexton Single Malt is a brand that is perfectly aligned with the spirit and escapism of this series, and we’re excited to collaborate across all 24 of these final episodes in a variety of ways that delight this highly engaged and vibrant fan community. The finish sees some more of that winey character hanging about, which, along with the nutty elements, is the only real indication that this has been aged in sherry casks. Its Black Barrel uses the age-old method of maturing in charred bourbon barrels to impart intense aromas of burnt butterscotch, dried vine fruit and oak. Differentiating oneself from the rest of the pack is tough, but the people behind The Sexton have done it.

Review: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey - Drinkhacker Review: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey - Drinkhacker

From camping to keeping an eagle eye out for Bigfoot, you can find Madison in nature, enjoying a glass of whiskey with her husband. Matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, the nose is full of spicy, sweet character with toasted oak, buttery hot cross bun and creamy vanilla at the fore. I mean for a 4 year old whiskey bottled at 40% I don't expect fireworks and so it delivers admirably for what it is. As a master blender and distiller, I am the caretaker of this amazing whiskey while it’s in the cask.Irish folk band The Dubliners famously sang about having whiskey in their jar, and you’ll fast be wanting to join them (on the whiskey, anyway) with this excellent selection. We also considered whether the whiskey would be drunk neat (or with some water), or whether it would be extra well-suited to a mixer. Throughout the 19th century, Irish whiskey reigned supreme over its Scottish rival, before falling out of favour. The bottle itself is also worth special note: It’s a squat, black hexagonal decanter (“sexton,” get it?
