I chose something different for Halloween this year, a classic ghost story. I've seen the movies that came from this book series and a couple of the TV shows. The depressed, indifferent heir of a vast coffee import fortune, Peter Van Dyke finds his life and high society engagement turned upside down when his secretary, Josephine Duval, determines to “rescue” him by ruining him morally. After an amusing scandal in a coat closet, he is cast adrift in a fog with a motley crew that includes a bishop of the Episcopal Church and a former nude model named Aspirin Liz. The enterprising party lands unceremoniously on the shores of a naturist resort, and the liberation of the coffee importer is set in motion. Smith, in one of his few comic novels devoid of any element of the supernatural, assumes the reader would know that "Jaegers" refers to a union suit.

Secondly, many of this supporting cast are French and their speech is presented in literal English. This I found very funny, juvenile as I am. Thus we have moments such as: A lot of drinking and horseplay ensues where he basically runs away and tosses away all his "decency" to go on a road trip with thieving, mooching, gulping insane amount of booze 4 ghost pals (the ghost entourage grows) and half a ghost dog. It's okay because the ghosts restore a pep to his step, but they do almost kill him at several parts, and they still think nothing of driving around wasted out of their minds. This is just no longer that funny, and it sort of contributes to how dated this book is. Two things gave me great pleasure. Firstly, Wodehouse tends to people his stories with a small cast suitable to stage farce. After I finish one of his books I increasingly find myself feeling what a small, melancholy, limited and unfruitful world he portrays. Smith, by contrast, in this novel has a film set in mind with his core (or corps?) of stars and a large supporting cast; he creates a world that is more recognizably real because it’s fuller and less confined. I prefer this.Quite funny, but not Thorne Smith's best work. Topper is once again pursued by ghosts who turn his life upside down, this is an extract which sets gives you some idea of the tone of the book:
