Today I would like to share my thoughts and impressions on a beautiful new book by Chris Norrington called, “ Crochet Collage Garden.” I was so happy to have found it in the craft section of my local bookstore! I often sit and look through crochet books and magazines and work on a variety of crochet projects while I spend time amongst the books. The atmosphere of a bookstore is relaxing and peaceful. And, of course, I have fun perusing the crochet section! Thank you to Chris Norrington and her publisher, David and Charles Ltd., for giving permission to use these photos. 🙂 This collage represents the reawakening earth and spring flowers, buds and branches. These 10 different stems are displayed in a pretty flower vase. Designs include pussy willow, daffodils, grape hyacinths and other springtime favorites. Cottage Garden

The designs include a wide range of different flowers and plants. While some patterns depict plants viewed straight-on and in full-bloom, others show plants viewed from a side viewpoint and only partially open. Buds, seedheads, berries, and mushrooms are also featured, as well as individual leaves, stems with leaves, ferns, and grasses. After completing her degree in Geography at Durham University, Chris taught in primary schools for several years. Having always had an interest in crafting, she started her own business called ‘Chris made this’ selling handmade gifts online and at craft fairs once her two children were grown up. She now focusses on creating her own crochet designs and sharing colourful crochet inspiration through her social media. As well as crochet and gardening, Chris enjoys walking, reading, knitting and yoga, and lives in North Yorkshire with her husband. The collage themes include Woodland Glade, inspired by a sun-dappled, shady forest corner with ferns and snowdrops, the Vintage Blue Bouquet collage is inspired by the shapes and soft pastel colours of Lily-of-the-valley and Scabious, and the Flower Meadow collage evokes a prairie-style meadow with ornamental grasses interspersed with tall perennial flowers.

Competition terms & conditions And then you get to put them together! As appliques, artwork, you could even sew them into a giant bespoke blanket! And I really love the idea of putting them on the front of greeting cards. They are arranged into 10 Collages - collections inspired by Chris's garden, each including 10 different patterns. They represent a "year in (her) Yorkshire garden" - how lovely! Alongside the more usual front-on view of flowers in full bloom, Chris has included some patterns for flowers viewed from the side, half-opened flowers, buds, seedheads, berries and fungi. There is also a large variety of foliage types from individual leaves to leafy stems, ferns, and grasses. Each of the collages has a different, sometimes seasonal, theme and all the compositions are different – there are wreaths and bouquets, some All the patterns include the yarn and hook used. Most seem to be shown with DK weight yarn, and made with a 3mm crochet hook - but certainly not all! And of course, these pieces are perfect for any odd balls or leftover bits of yarn you have - just match the hook to the yarn! The possibilities are just about endless - every creation will be your own!

Collages Woodland Glade This collage is inspired by a sun-dappled, shady corner in my garden. In late winter, the dark green shoots and graceful white bells of the first snowdrops start to emerge, followed shortly after by the pale yellow petals of the primroses. Ferns grow very happily in the damp shade, and it’s always a joy to see their fronds slowly unfurling as the days grow gradually longer and warmer. Shy little violets peep out from underneath piles of logs, and clumps of tiny pale toadstools pop up here and there. Pretty pale green and dusky pink hellebores also make a welcome appearance. Twisting stems of ivy wind their way up the tree trunks and patches of mottled green lichen grow slowly amongst mossy tree roots. When the sun shines through the new leaves in the spring, it is a magical little corner of the garden. 1 I've used… The book includes a fantastic Techniques Section with step-by-step photo tutorials for the basic crochet stitches, embroidery stitches and other techniques that are used. Add more leaves as required along both sides of the main stem. If you vary the intervals between the leaves, it will give a more natural effect. The Collages (aka chapters) are titled: Woodland Glade, Spring Awakening, Cottage Garden, Vintage Blue Bouquet, Midsummer Daydream, Flower Meadow, Terracotta Pot, Poppy Pozy, Autumn Wreath, and Midwinter Magic. Each of the patterns in each section includes written instructions as well as a little chart! This is particularly helpful, as the patterns are written in UK terms.

You can have fun recreating the collages that Chris has designed or you can mix and match the motifs of your favourite plants and flowers to make your own creations. There are instructions for which yarn to use to create the motifs but you can experiment with different types of yarn to create your own versions. Crochet Collage Gardenis different from most crochet pattern books. It's sort of like a crochet stitch dictionary - but for plant pieces! Each design uses just a few yards of yarn and takes just minutes to make. There are front-view flowers, as well as half-opened flowers, side views, buds, seeds, berries, and even fungi! All of the motifs are inspired in some way by Chris' garden and the collages roughly follow the pattern of the seasons from the first flowers in spring, through to the frosty leaves of winter. The motif designs are inspired by the colours and shapes found in nature and, while some are recognisable as specific plant species, they are not intended to be botanically accurate representations of particular plants. Each of the collages has a different, sometimes seasonal, theme and all of the compositions are different - there are wreaths and bouquets, some are arranged in a jug or a vase while others grow straight from the ground. Alongside the more usual front-on view of flowers in full bloom, Chris has included some patterns for flowers viewed from the side, half-opened flowers, buds, seed heads, berries and fungi. There is also a large variety of foliage types from individual leaves to leafy stems, ferns, and grasses.
