Even for teens, growing up in the age of superhero movies means that this book probably isn’t offering anything new in terms of story other than Danny. A diverse array of women drive the novel - from the white, gay and trans Danny, to the Latina Calamity, to Doc Impossible who is coded as non-white ( Her dark hair is pulled back in a braid) to Utopia who is - wait for it - a cyborg villain. His first idea after seeing Danny in her new body is to stare at her (enormous) boobs and the day after, to ask her on a date. For example, as an eight-year-old the future Kaiser, who had a withered left arm due to damage from forceps suffered at birth, was made to take riding lessons, and "[o]ver and over" per the supervising tutor, the "'weeping prince' was 'set on his horse, without stirrups and compelled to go through the paces. Do I believe that such statements would be made so quickly upon meeting this young 15 year old teenager in the context of a business/recruitment meeting?

The narrative doesn’t shy away from the terrible things that trans people face in their daily lives, but Danny is a survivor and she never gives up. I loved the chapters we get when characters talk about superhero tech, as that is one of my favorite elements of superhero stories.A sequel, covering the naval war between Germany and Britain, Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany, and the Winning of the Great War at Sea was published in 2004. This was the most offensive part of the book – the idea that being a woman means that you are more emotional. She was flying in a cloud layer when a nearby jet sucks a goose into its engine causing it to explode. Daniels wanted to show readers the various ways in which trans people suffer, and David represents another type of betrayal.On the other hand, there are numerous characters who represent that difficulty of existing as an openly trans person, even one who has superpowers.

The white capes in their gleaming downtown tower offer unlimited resources and government support, but some seem reluctant to accept a transgender Dreadnought. If Danny cant sort through the confusion of coming out, master her powers, and stop Utopia in time, humanity faces extinction.She’s survived a lot of cruelty and is riddled with insecurities about her worthiness of Dreadnought’s mantle. She's taken to meet Dreadnought's colleagues (some welcoming, some not) in the Legion Pacifica and gets some answers to burning questions. Even when she’s not tiptoeing around her own home or rushing threw breakfast to avoid a confrontation, she’s battling back the tides of idiot, stupid, worthless he’s branded into her head. Dreadnought is a superhero story following Danielle Tozer, a transgirl who is given superpowers and her perfect body by the superhero Dreadnought.

I don’t want to be unfair but I really disliked it and even with such a cool premise, I really don’t want to read more. I did have some issues with some makes and feels, but the overall quality of writing, especially Danielle’s voice, her banter with Doc Impossible, and the action scenes far outweigh them. We'll hide under the road until the emergency crews arrive, and then I'll find some paramedics and bring them back here.As Utopia continues to work towards the fulfillment of her evil plans, Danny has to figure out her place in the world and whether she’s ready to step up as the new Dreadnought! This book also did such an excellent job of balancing the types of people that Danny encounters after she gets the body she wants - not to mention an incredible set of superpowers.
