Born on May 1, 1968 in Bordeaux, France, Alain Laboile is a photographer and father of six. In 2004, as he needed to put together a portfolio of his work as a sculptor, he acquired a camera, and thus developped a taste for macrophotography, spurred by his passion for entomology. Later on, he pointed his lens towards his growing family which became his major subject: a life on the edge of the world, where intemporality and the universality of childhood meet. Nudity here does not mean anything… People are naked because they are nudists and spend the warmer months at resorts, free from feelings of embarrassment,” the author said. Police said on 8 December that they had detained a man whose age and previous criminal record fit the profile of Alexander Petrunko, a member of SERB, an organization that began as a pro-Russia separatist group in Ukraine and now known for targeting anti-Kremlin activists and rallies. He was charged with “petty hooliganism”. The gallery decided to reopen the exhibition on 8 December after being given a green light by investigators who rejected all of the lawsuits filed against it and found nothing criminal in Sturges’ works.

The “Without embarrassment” project was launched in early September 2016. It consisted of photographs of the families of the nudists of France, Northern California and Ireland, with whom Sturges was friends and communicated. The author photographed them throughout his long creative career. Starting work in series in the 1970s, Sturges captured 3 generations of models. The shots revealed their beauty, the girls voluntarily and without embarrassment posed for the photographer.
