The illustrative language and use of adjectives is very helpful for children to extend how they describe things and to think about things from a different perspectives. Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family, but their house is on the wrong side of the road from the park where there is a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs! I would also suggest a slight content warning if read to the very young due to the hints of mortality. After serving as a soldier in World War II, Dick King-Smith became a farmer and then a teacher of English. This lesson pack has everything you need to support children's writing, including planning, differentiated activities, and slides for input.

Your Year 2 children will then be guided through how to extract information from the text, considering what in the story is factual and what is fiction. He and his family have spent their lives dreaming about reaching the park, but are prevented from doing so by the main road which they are unable to cross. On one of his attempts he gets a bump to the head by a cyclist which results in his words all mixed up when he tries to speak - and he becomes a "hodgeheg". This is a good story of road safety and overcoming obstacles, which I used with year 3 which they enjoyed and were able to access easily as a class with it being read to them. Children will then independently find information in extracts of the story and record what they have learnt about hedgehogs. The 35th anniversary of The Hodgeheg – a timeless classic tale for young children from the master of animal stories, Dick King-Smith.

The 35th anniversary of The Hodgeheg - a timeless classic tale for young children from the master of animal stories, Dick King-Smith. Well, I’ll look through each one and pull ones that have deteriorated… Wow, a hedgehog, wow, this is cute! This book was fiction I enjoyed it because I liked how Max had great determination to find a way for Hedgehog's to cross the road safely.Uncle B was my favourite character because he was saying nice things about people and helping to look after them.

Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born. Before planning and writing, your Year 2 class will explore the features of non-chronological reports in the fourth lesson of this series. I think this would be suitable for either year 3 or 4 and could also be used for independent reading and curriculum support in PSHE for things such as road safety and overcoming obstacles. Among his best-loved books is Babe, The Sheep Pig, which became a major film and was nominated for an Academy Award.Onto the book: I loved this book, quite a cute plot: a hedgehog wants to resolve the issue of hedgehogs getting hit while crossing the street. I was surprised when I discovered tHat I didn't remember all that much about the story, but I thought that added to my enjoyment. Loved the hedgehog point of view and felt like this was a cross between Toad Rage by Morris Gleitzman and Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. His bravery and determination made him try again and again and it's his not giving up that makes him such an inspiring little hedgehog-hero.

He wrote a great number of children's books, including The Sheep-Pig (winner of the Guardian Award and filmed as Babe ), Harry's Mad , Noah's Brother , The Hodgeheg , Martin's Mice , Ace , The Cuckoo Child and Harriet's Hare (winner of the Children's Book Award in 1995). I liked Max's determination to find a safe way to cross the road as well as his courage and fortitude to continue his quest despite being hurt in the process. He does so and, after the driver of a milk float almost crashes to avoid him, Max arrives home safely. The story focusses on Max the "hodgeheg" who tries to devise a way in which hedgehogs can cross the road safely.

Firstly, children will look at how using a range of sentence openers can encourage the reader to want to find out more about the subject.
