You can defend "Psycho" as being a sort of performative digest of late-eighties social problems, but it's no more than that. The book has garnered notoriety for its graphic violence and has led to it being censored in multiple countries. The romance crumbles in the wake of the election, when he must attend dinner after dinner with shell-shocked liberal friends whose “hysterical” refusal to accept the results drives him up a wall.

Then there are numbingly excessive details, like the ones here, that add little to our understanding of Patrick Bateman’s mind and only serve to pad out the word count to a punishing length.the dread that easton ellis creates in this book goes far beyond DFW's simple assertion that american psycho 'does nothing but dramatize how dark and stupid everything is. Only when he devotes a hilariously earnest chapter to the analysis of all Whitney Houston's albums does he talk about emotion or confess to being moved.

A literal, exhaustively faithful adaptation of American Psycho would run six hours, be banned in every country, and be unwatchable, but these filmmakers did a spectacular job alchemizing literary dross into cinematic gold.

American Psycho begins with the words at the entrance to Dante's Hell, "scrawled in blood red lettering on the side of the Chemical Bank near the corner of Eleventh and First". The events throughout the book and film paint Bateman’s path, leaving the reader to read attentively and reflect on modern-day criticisms of the social gap. This book is a good read for late teens, young adults, and adults in general, covering more mature topics which could be controversial or inappropriate for younger audiences.
