In some respects, popping a Home Master descaling sachet into your kettle looks like you’re sticking a tea bag straight into the kettle! Hard water is most commonly found in the south east and London, although if you live on the east coast (including large parts of Yorkshire) you might also experience rapid limescale build-up. Doing this every four to eight weeks will not only prevent you from ingesting solid minerals, but it can also help your appliance last longer. So, if you want to make sure that your morning cuppa isn’t ruined by mineral deposits, you’ve got to descale your kettle on a regular basis.

If you’d rather not scrub, you can add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to 500ml of water and boil several times, allowing it to cool between each boiling. Be sure to open a window or put on your extractor fan, as this method produces a steamy, vinegary fug. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations June 2014 you have a duty to take reasonable care of Products whilst they are in your possession. If you’ve tried all our descaling methods and your kettle really has given up the ghost, it’s time for a new one.Tap water containing large amounts of limescale may not taste great though, and it often gives hot drinks a slightly salty or bitter aftertaste. As a guide, you will need to use about one sachet every three months if you live in a hard water area, and one sachet every six months if you live in a soft water area.

In fact, the minerals found in hard water (calcium and magnesium) are often found in bottled water that you can pick up at your local supermarket. Extra care should always be taken when using chemicals, as they can be corrosive and may cause harm if they come into contact with your eyes or skin. In a stove-top kettle, it reduces the frequency of manual cleaning to once every few months – or even less often when filling the kettle from a water filter jug, as it’s now been seven months since our kettle’s last descaling, and it’s still not yet in need of attention. If you've got hard water, you'll notice that the water below the suds will be cloudy rather than clear, and the suds themselves will be very shallow and not fluffy. This is not intended to be a full statement of your rights under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. After 10 minutes has elapsed, you’ll need to pour the water away, refill the kettle to the halfway line and boil it again to remove residue. We carefully inspect each limescale filter to check that it fits snugly into the spout of the kettle, as otherwise limescale particles can sneak around the edges and still make their way into your cup.
