The conversation regarding referencing often focuses on punitive measures to respond to plagiarism rather than developing appropriate citation practices. The second edition of this leading guide helps students to develop reflective thinking skills, improve their critical analysis and construct arguments more effectively. In 2011, Victor Glynn reviewed it as "one of the best texts for general critical thinking around at the moment" in Education Bookseller.

Stella has authored a number of study skills guides as part of the Macmillan Study Skills series including Critical Thinking Skills, Skills for Success and The Macmillan Student Planner (previously published as The Palgrave Student Planner). Here is a quick description and cover image of book Critical Thinking Skills, 4th Edition written by Stella Cottrell which was published in . I found that a lot of it was really just common sense, but the book spells out what common sense actually is in the context of responding to written arguments, which is helpful and made me realise quite how much is involved in a process that I previously took for granted. Moreover, the book also enables the reader to assess their own skills which can be quite useful for writing arguments and identifying the possible flaws in the same. Stella Cottrell's student-centred approach demystifies critical thinking and breaks down a complex subject into manageable chunks.

Critical Thinking Skills - Bloomsbury Publishing

Our most everyday activities require us to make use of some of the basic skills involved in critical thinking, such as: working out whether we believe what we see or hear; taking steps to find out whether something is likely to be true, arguing our own case if someone doesn’t believe us. In the June 2011 edition of Education Bookseller, Victor Glynn characterised Cottrell's books as "concise, clearly laid out and covering a wide range of subjects. This is to be expected, as we don’t need to employ the same level of critical thinking for everything we do. It's easy to fall into just sitting, waiting and hoping for inspiration, expecting an answer to fall from the sky. Our donations to The Rainbow Centre have helped provide an education and a safe haven to hundreds of children who live in appalling conditions.People later in their careers may find it a bit basic but you can consider it as a sort of reference. She supports students from diverse backgrounds, such as those with dyslexia and mature, international and disabled students. For Cottrell, it is important that all students regularly reflect on how their course and extracurricular activities relate to their future ambitions: "Linking PDP, the programme of study and the student's future is especially important for younger students, who are less likely to have thought about careers. In recent years, critical thinking has been considered as one of the 21st century important skills that students need to achieve to succeed in modern society. In 2011, the University of Bedfordshire announced that an honorary doctorate was to be awarded to Stella Cottrell "in recognition of her 'outstanding contribution to lifelong learning and widening participation'".

Critical thinking allows students to think about their own thoughts and the reasons behind their standpoints. The only chapters that were useful to me were 1,2,10,12 and I didn't find all the pages useful, only a couple from each chapter. If you have absolutely no critical skills whatsoever then this book might well be worth it, although they will teach you these skills in high school english class over and over again without you even noticing. It also contains new and updated examples that link to current affairs, showing the importance of critical thinking as a lifelong skill. Whether they were successful at study in the past or not, Stella contends that all students benefit from taking an individualised approach that suits them, as they are now, and looking with fresh eyes at each new challenge. Cottrell believes that accurate self-reflection is difficult and so includes brief structured reflective models throughout her books to help students. Critical thinking is the ability to apply reasoning and logic to unfamiliar ideas, opinions and situations.
