For instance, because the preset speeds slope toward one another, the machine’s full flexibility cannot be experienced until the switches are manually adjusted. In 2021, emulating circuits with digital technology is a piece of cake. Digital pedals offer a wider range of features and, to most, will sound indistinguishable from their analog counterparts, though some will argue they are not as ‘warm’. For our money, the MXR Phase 90 takes the cake as the best phaser pedal. This classic and stylish pedal is affordable and gives you that phaser sound you’ve heard on countless records. Flexible enough to sound great on both sides of heavy gain. Compact enclosure and smart, simple control layout. Nice price.

The control knobs are simple and easy to use, meaning you can get loads of great tones with minimal effort. When it comes to finding the best phaser pedal for your needs, you must first decide if you're looking for a vintage-inspired sound or a radical space-age unit. The first period is known as the "Script period," in reference to the cursive logo on the case. The earliest script logo pedals were made in the basement shop of the MXR founders [5] and the logos were silk screened. These very first pedals can be identified by a slightly larger font "MXR" on the case. The MXR Series 2000 sported six models. These original pedals in the series included the Dyna Comp, Distortion +, Phaser, Stereo Chorus, Stereo Flanger and Time Delay. In late 1983 MXR announced a digital sound effects pedal generator simply known as the Junior. The Junior was released in early 1984 and was added to the other six pedals in the Series 2000 line. The Junior boasted four sound effects: a laser, a clap, a snare and a high hat. The effects were samples stored on a replaceable 24-pin ROM chip that was produced by MXR. MXR continued to manufacture most of the Reference, Commande and 2000 Series pedals until they closed down in 1984. Very basically, a phaser works by splitting the input signal into two identical parts and then delaying one of the copies, creating a phase shift. The relationship between these two signals is continuously changing over time, and this is what results in the famous swooshing sound.

Phaser pedals are a favorite of guitarists worldwide. Whether searching for screeching 80’s tones or just looking to add a bit of dimension to your clean playing, a good phaser is a worthwhile addition to any guitarist’s collection. It produces the wonderful old Eddie sound. Eddie used an outdated Phase 90 MXR brake earlier in the day. This pedal sounds distinct from the original model when asked to be replicated. The MXR Phase 100 could create various phased-out sounds, from delicate squiggles to deeper, squawking variations, and has a Speed knob to adjust whether chaotic or moderate it goes. The MXR Phase 90 Classifier musical instrument phaser is ideal. It is dependable, well made, and easy to use. Different amounts of phase shift stages create a varying phased sound. A digital phaser pedal often has four, eight, 10, or 12 stages, recreating a variety of phased sounds. Alternatively, an analog phaser usually has fewer phase stage settings and therefore less variety, because additional stages require more components - most classic '70s phasers use four stages. What should I look for in a phaser pedal?

There are few controls on certain MXR EVH Phase 90. It features a variable speed lever and an on/off switch. We talk about ‘ phase‘ a lot regarding recording and mixing. We usually don’t want to alter the phase of a sound as it can cause mix problems when certain frequencies get canceled out. However, a phaser pedal uses this technique to deliberately create movement in the sound for a watery, psychedelic effect. The Phase 45 effect is noticeably enhanced when the Script switch is turned on, producing an immediate swirl resembling a uni-vibe and luscious warmth. If you are seeking to imitate the guitar heroes of the '70s, then a basic 4-stage phaser will do the job. The MXR 90 or Electro-Harmonix Bad Stone are brilliant options.
