The Slings and Arrows Graphic Novel Guide doesn't care where you've been, where you're going or where you're located.

Books of Doom’ is a 6-part series that attempts to map out the origins and rise of Victor Von Doom, future ruler of Latveria and super criminal. Roger is just an ordinary boy, in an ordinary world – or so he thinks, until a grumpy dwarf warrior, Mossbelly MacFearsome, appears out of thin air and saves him from the school bully. The insides of the book were done by Pablo Raimondi, who you might remember from X-Factor (and if you don’t, shame on you).

Given the parameters of what Brubaker and Raimundi set out to do, it surely couldn’t be expected to be carried out to higher standards, and it’s shame Marvel don’t seem to have recognised this.

She cast a spell that allowed her to gain great power from the demon, and used it to kill all the soldiers in a village, unknowingly also killing every child in the village at the same time. You’ll follow Doom as he learns to mix science and the dark arts, the first time he meets Reed Richards, his innocent childhood love with Valeria, and his eventual descent into “madness” (although he certainly wouldn’t consider himself mad) as he rises up against the King of Latveria to assume the throne he believes rightfully his. Eventually we get to how he takes Latveria and becomes ruler, and there's a twist at the end, as the narration has all been to a reporter who wants to profile him, but the revelation leaves us to wonder. If those weren’t memorable enough, the device of the present day Doom commenting in situ on his past makes for some imposing illustrations.Ed Brubaker schaffte es der altbekannten Entstehunggeschichte neue Aspekte abzugewinnen und neue Details hinzuzufügen. Short but sweet, this six-part series documents Doom's rise from wandering Gypsy to ruler of Latveria and arch-enemy of Reed Richards, aka Mr. Horror and grief intertwine to define a character equal parts madman, genius, and zealot --and one of the most complex and memorable villains in graphic novel history.

It’s one in a long line of stories in all forms of media that tries to delve into a villainous character’s psyche, find the roots of their evil and humanize them so that we can have a better understanding of them. There's Doom's love for his mother, and his obsession with saving her from Hell, but the only other thing approaching love is for Valeria, another girl who grew up with him. Following Victor Von Doom's life from his earliest moments, through to when he took the throne of Latveria, this collection of stories is a dark and revealing examination of how an innocent young boy grew up to be a tyrant. Since Byrne was on the book so long, he effectively also became the steward of the FF's main adversary, Doctor Doom. While it worked pretty well for the most part - allowing readers to see how Doom was coloring the story slightly - I don’t think there was enough of that type of material to make me love the format. What really made this a 3-star read for me was the untapped potential when it came to Doom's motivations, I just wished that Brubaker went a bit deeper.

Are you sick of seeing this mad genius relegated to a supporting player in other characters’ comics?

Victor encounters a lot of tragedy in his early years, his mother dabbled in the dark arts, and it cost her her life and soul; his father died saving Victor while they were on the run from the evil Baron in Latveria.
