Heinrich was surrounded by odd devices. Every conceivable type of microscope was crammed onto a long wooden desk. Any extra space was surrendered to test tubes, crucibles, beakers, lenses, and scales. Behind Heinrich were shelves filled with hundreds of priceless books, at least priceless to a chemist turned forensic scientist. There were tomes on fingerprint identification, applied mechanics, analytic geometry, and powdered vegetable drugs. WATSON AND HOLMES: New Paradigm Studios". I loved the notes on Heinrichs's views of "experts" and how anyone could be considered an expert even if they were a student without hands-on experience. It reminded me of many of the "experts" paraded about on television today. Sad that we have come full circle. PBS & BBC Ink Multi-Title Co-Production Deal". Variety. 19 January 2015. This engrossing read ends with a follow up on the major players of the time, and discusses the many methods developed by Heinrich which are still used today, including his meticulous cataloguing of evidence. Weisman, Jon (22 February 2010). "PBS climbs 'Upstairs' with BBC". Variety. Reed Business Information . Retrieved 24 February 2010. I spent months staring at thousands of photographs, some taken by Heinrich’s assistants and others developed by the criminalist himself (he was an avid photographer who relished documenting crime scenes). I noted hundreds of details, like the way he squinted as he adjusted the focus knob on his favourite microscope. The way his teeth gripped the bit of a straight-stemmed pipe as a small stream of smoke billowed from its bowl. The way his forehead wrinkled as he hunched over evidence. The way his round rimless glasses fit extra-snuggly around his temples—a requirement for a chemist who spent much of his time leaning over a microscope.a b c d e f g h i j k l Sue Vertue, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. DVD audio commentary for "A Study in Pink" I was fascinated by Heinrich’s method of putting together criminal profiles, especially as he was also developing the method for doing so during the 1920s. The minutiae that he focused on to arrive at conclusions about the type of person they were looking for made me realize I am not as detail-oriented as I would like to think. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce played Holmes and Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles, which launched a 14-film series. Rathbone is regarded as the Holmes of his generation. A fascinating work of historical resurrection. By deftly recounting a series of murder cases from the 1920s and 1930s, Kate Dawson constructs a complex and engrossing portrait of a brilliant investigator and illuminates the origins of modern forensic science.” —Karen Olsson, author of The Weil Conjectures: On Math and the Pursuit of the Unknown

The Guardian. Archived from the original on 2 October 2013 . Retrieved 18 January 2011. The phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" has become one of the most quoted and iconic aspects of the character. However, although Holmes often observes that his conclusions are "elementary", and occasionally calls Watson "my dear Watson", the phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" is never uttered in any of the sixty stories by Conan Doyle. [176] One of the nearest approximations of the phrase appears in " The Adventure of the Crooked Man" (1893) when Holmes explains a deduction: "'Excellent!' I cried. 'Elementary,' said he." [177] [178] During Heinrichs most productive years of research and development in the 1930's to 1940's he had many competitors, most falling way behind his abilities. However he had to face these people and contradict them in many court hearings. It took Heinrich many years of testimony and proving his forensic methods to win out as a qualified scientific forensic expert. The titles, written in six different languages, would intrigue any intellectual. Blood, Urine, Faeces and Moisture: A Book of Tests, read one cover. Arsenic in Papers and Fabrics, read another. He even owned a tattered dictionary of slang used by criminals. They seemed unrelated, a cache of mismatched textbooks in the library of a brilliant madman. But each was a tiny piece belonging to a bigger puzzle that only he could assemble. The portrait of a genius and the tumultuous era in which he lived began to emerge. Holmes's friendship with Watson is his most significant relationship. When Watson is injured by a bullet, although the wound turns out to be "quite superficial", Watson is moved by Holmes's reaction:
