In 2023, I think further innovation will be the key development with more advanced techniques for obtaining delicate flavours in non-alcoholic drinks being developed as well as taste/flavour combinations breaking new barriers in originality and moving away from traditional alcoholic drink flavours. A classic Negroni is made of three spirits: gin (London Dry), Campari and sweet (red) vermouth. That rich, delightfully bittersweet mix of citrus, herb and juniper can be recreated with a good alcohol-free gin, Crodino (an alcohol-free Italian Aperitivo with a very similar flavour profile to Campari) and non-alcoholic vermouth like Martini Vibrante - which is available online.

As well as their flavours, the botanicals were chosen for their health benefits as they are filled with nutrients and bio active compounds that are great for the body and brain. In addition, New London Light is sugar free, allergen free, vegan friendly and low calorie. New Western Gin: This is really a catch-all term for newer gins that don’t fit into the previous categories. But the through line is that these gins, while still using juniper as a key ingredient, are flavored with a wide range of botanicals, and often use ones that are grown locally to showcase the flavors of where they are made.

Amplify Distilled Alcohol Free Spirit

Before I move on, I need to introduce you to a term: Retronasal Olfaction -- this is when something in your mouth has scent pass up into your nose through your throat. It's a bit more than that, but I don't want to copy/paste a bunch of text here, and I think providing links is generally frowned upon, but rest assured, if you're interested in learning more, Wikipedia is your friend In 2020 we initially produced ‘First Light’ within this range with flavours very much inspired by gin; juniper with a little ginger and habanero for cut through/warmth which had an excellent response from critics. The lower-alcohol expression is said to be ‘refreshingly citrussy’, with notes of piney juniper, and is an evolution of the brand’s Small Gin product. The 11-year-old Bourbon spent almost a year in seasoned Scotch casks from Islay to impart peat notes. Finish: Smooth and slightly drying. A tangy peachiness turns herbaceous, with fragrant lemongrass, fresh coriander and a hint of menthol.

The resulting 55%-ABV liquid offers a nose of toasted marshmallow, sandalwood, sugar plums, marzipan and creamed corn. The palate follows with hints of ‘winter campfire, mesquite barbecue, leather, piped tobacco, cedar and bone marrow’.

Ceder's Wild Non-Alcoholic Spirit

Non-Alcoholic: There is no other product in the category like this. No alcohol, doesn’t mean no taste or enjoyment. Less is more. Hayman’s London Light is an evolution of our Small Gin innovation, and comes in a 700ml bottle,” said Hayman’s Gin Co-Owner James Hayman, per The Spirits Business . New London Light takes its inspiration from its birthplace in South Devon. Indeed, it is named after the lighthouse that marks the entrance to the harbour in Long Island South. This lighthouse served as a beacon of light for the Salcombe Fruit Schooners trading cargoes of fruit and spices with the New World. It maintains its roots by being distilled and crafted at a waterside distillery in South Devon. Nose: Bursting with fresh lime zest and orange sherbet. A whiff of cardamom and violet, underpinned by a piney juniper note. Inspired by the historical distinction of London Dry gin, Salcombe Distillery Company intends to set a benchmark for flavour in the alcohol-free sphere with the release of New London Light, its first non-alcoholic spirit. We spoke to co-founder and director Howard Davies to find out more about the bottling, the first in a series for the distillery…

For instance our work with the Marine Conservation Society protecting and regenerating seagrass in which we donate to meaningful projects from every bottle of New London Light we sell was inspired by seeing what some other brands had done in other industries ‘above ground’ on planting trees and protecting wildlife habitats. Corks may be popping on bottles of New London Light this Dry January, but when it comes to distilling sans-booze, the team’s only just getting started. New London Light is the first bottling in what’s set to become a full non-alcoholic range, with two more booze-free variants planned for release before the end of the year. While the finer details remain well and truly under wraps, the focus for Davies and the wider Salcombe Distilling Co. team is centred on “innovation of taste and of process”.Taste: We don’t just want to focus on how it tastes, but we really want to convey that NLL tastes fantastic. Better than anything in the category. Taste has not been compromised, despite removing alcohol. Taste is what we do well. Taste. It has to start there; everything we have done has been to produce a range of sprits and aperitifs that simply taste exceptional and can be enjoyed as part of any drinking occasion with or without others who may be drinking alternative alcoholic beverages. IF you love the taste of alcohol but the thought of a hangover makes you shiver, then may we bring to your attention some of the best non-alcoholic gins for your consideration.

In addition to the core focus of taste, we are very proud of our production process for New London Light in which the heart of each liquid is produced either through traditional or vacuum distillation in our waterside distillery in Salcombe by our team, prior to then having further specialist botanical extracts blended in with our partners; we believe we are fairly unique in being a core part of the production process rather than just having this outsourced. New London Light is crafted by distilling a combination of rich Macedonian juniper berries, zesty ginger and warm habanero capsicum to create a full-bodied base spirit. This is then blended with botanical distillates and extracts from a further 15 carefully selected botanicals including orange, sage, cardamom, cascarilla bark and lemongrass, each perfectly complementing each other to provide a complex and layered spectrum of flavour. New London Light is perfect for any occasion at anytime of the day. It’s made for everyone-those who want no alcohol, are reducing their alcohol intake, who want to be healthier or for those that just want to try something new. It’s a thumbs up from ONIN London.

INGREDIENTS

It derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries and is a distilled alcoholic drink that originated as a medicinal liquor. You may like your NLL (50ml) with 150ml premium light tonic water, orange slice and safe leaf which altogether is less than 30 calories. An aromatic and warming balance of juniper, ginger and habanero capsicum on the palate with fragrant bitterness from sage and cascarilla bark.
