Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows. i am absolutely fine with calling this a marriage thriller or a psychological thriller, but the word "suspense" and the wrong readalikes set up certain expectations that will be unmet by this book. At first I was upset with Grace for not getting out of there but things are not as easy as they seem. Grace is living a nightmare beyond comprehension.

Lucy Palmer had it all. A successful career writing cosy mysteries, a theatre-critic husband, a large house in a desirable area of London and two well-adjusted children. But behind the facade lies something sinister, jealousy, controlling behaviour, multiple affairs, psychological abuse, threats and fear. The story was narrated in the first person by Lucy. She also reveals events in her marriage and earlier life which blended in seamlessly with the story, allowing you to build a full picture of why she is the woman she is now. I particularly liked how after twenty eight years of married life and two successful grown up children she managed to return to the person she was before and I was with her every emotional step as she shed her skin from the last few years. Livia has recently uncovered a secret about their daughter which, if revealed, will shake the foundation of their family to its core. She needs to tell Adam, but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together. Behind Closed Doors (1958 TV series), a 1958–1959 American spy docudrama TV series starring Bruce Gordon

What to Read Next

Lucy Palmer has it all: loving children, a dashing husband and a beautiful home. What goes on behind closed doors, however, is different matter. When something unthinkable happen, Lucy is forced to come to face-to-face with her mistakes and confront the secrets she's been keeping from herself and those she loves the most. If you thrive on books that leave you feeling trapped, isolated and with no one to turn to, then this is definitely the book for you. When Lucy Palmer's marriage to Michael ends suddenly, it turns her world upside down. As secrets start to unravel, Lucy leaves London and goes home to live with her elderly parents in the Chilterns. It allows her to look after her parents and to get her head together. maybe ive been reading some pretty farfetched mysteries/thrillers lately, but this felt pretty realistic and plausible, which is probably why i enjoyed it so much. i think psychological thrillers that make you think ‘holy crap… this could happen to me.’ are the best kind of thrillers. and although i have a non-negotiable long engagement rule, this did make me a little paranoid. congratulations! semifinalist in goodreads' best mystery/thriller AND debut author categories 2016!

Yet longueurs aside, this remains an entertainingly readable and well-researched glimpse into a world that fewer and fewer choose to be a part of, and perhaps rightly so. The chastened Pincher and those of his ilk should have heeded the Duke of Wellington’s advice: “Never write a letter to your mistress and never join the Carlton Club.” Lucy's perfect marriage ends with the death of her husband and she decides to leave the city and go and take care of her elderly parents which she finds a challenge. They enjoy life with a capital E and she learns a lot from them and realises how controlling her husband had been. This author’s writing is so simple and straightforward, but her storytelling is potent, as is her ability to construct a tension-filled plot. Catherine Alliott has sold over two million bestselling novels worldwide and has been translated into eighteen languages. “Behind Closed Doors” is her 17th novel and is a perfect Mother’s Day read. You can read more about this author and book here - https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/312/3... I received a copy of Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris from NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and to B.A. Paris for the opportunity. For me, there is no doubt that Catherine Alliott is an accomplished and skilful writer. The cleverly constructed plot, well-drawn characters, relatable themes, and easy-to-read and intelligent prose make for an enjoyable and compelling read. I finished Behind Closed Doors with a happy heart. This is a fantastic psychological thriller, complete with a monster so sadistic. I had no idea what was going to happen next. Every time I put the book down I tried to figure out how this horrific monster would possibly be defeated. Going over and over different scenarios in my head. An author that I will always praise, I began my adult reading journey with this Author and will forever push others to read her work 🥰🥰. i am also really pleased with the ending. it does end rather abruptly, but everything is tied up, so i didnt mind it. it doesnt happen often that i am satisfied with a conclusion to a mystery/thriller, so i am marking this one as a win. Triggers & warnings: Severe psychological abuse; non-violent but very disturbing. There is also a dog - I'll just leave it at that *sob*

Gaslighting". Flip the switch. Move over Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. This one is lit up and burning bright. This does not suggest that they hold no appeal to a certain kind of man. (There were once 50 clubs appealing exclusively to women; now there is one, the University Women’s Club.) Thévoz notes the incongruity between the ostentatious appearance of these establishments, both externally and internally, and their all-pervasive obsession with secrecy; this is best summed up by the society institution Boodle’s’ maxim that “the club has never sought public attention”. Would that the same could be said of its members. Thévoz briskly observes that “clubs had no shortage of cads and bounders”, with the apt qualifier that “politicians could be the most rum characters of all”. At least one club allowed its clientele to veto prospective new members with a ballot paper containing three options: “Yes”, “No” and “Good God, no”. QUEEN of the misery memoir Jenny Tomlin, mother of actress Martine McCutcheon, is not as tragic as you might imagine. If you can dig deep and find it in you to curb your need for concrete common sense and logic for the sake of some truly fun fiction, then you, my friend, are the perfect prospect for Behind Closed Doors.I listened to the audio version. The audio is good. It's short and only about 8 hours. The narrator does a good job, but the book translated into a Lifetime Movie via audio for me. It might be better to read a hardcopy of it. As Alice is getting to know her neighbours, she discovers a devastating secret about her new home, and begins to feel a strong connection with Nina, the therapist who lived there before. Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods. It was on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, and a woman was sitting inside—the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm, and she probably would have been hurt herself if she’d stopped. Not only that, her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. Holy moly what a ride!! I HAD to find out what happened, so seriously, I stayed in bed until NOON, with no thoughts of family, friends, or world chaos. Dry eye made the words blurry, but who cares? And food? Is that really necessary? My only necessity was finding out how this story turned out, to get me out of the claustrophobic terror created by a holy-shit psychopath. It was some tense! From the outside looking in Lucy has it all, a beautiful house and garden, a loving husband and two healthy grown up children that appear to be flourishing in their lives, but when there's a break in at Lucy's House and Michael, Her husband is caught in the cross fire and their marriage is about to come to an unexpected end.

I don't want to give up too much of the book because the biggest draw for it is the twisty parts of it. But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing. Where she left the car; if she took her pills; even the alarm code.On the inside, her husband is a controlling bully who manipulates and belittles Lucy and her career whilst flaunting his many affairs in front of her with little respect for everyone concerned. Lucy has been made to feel worthless and almost as though she deserves the way her husband treats her. When her marriage ends suddenly, she has the chance to start afresh and find the Lucy that has been buried for too long along with some much needed happiness and joy. The writing is excellent—it flows seamlessly and there are no fillers. And the story is told by the woman, Grace. I always love first-person narration—it makes the story so believable (unless it’s an unreliable narrator, of course, which she is not). I won’t say anything about the plot because for me it’s more fun to go into a thriller blind. As the truth of her marriage threatens to surface, Lucy seizes the opportunity to swap her house in London - and the stories it hides - for a rural escape to her parents' farmhouse in the Chilterns. Behind Closed doors is yet another outstanding debut novel, and one that came highly recommended to me by folks who understand my taste in books. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this, there's great character formation and even though its very character driven I never once lost interest.
