John Brown established his Perth grocery business in 1800 before moving the premises to Atholl Street seven years later. It was his daughter, Margaret, who married Matthew Gloag. She took over the family business from her father in 1824 and ran it until Matthew took control a little over a decade later. By the time Matthew Gloag died in 1860, the family business portfolio focused mostly on wines and his son, William Gloag, largely continued this trend. William Grant & Sons, the company which owns a significant chunk of Scottish distilleries including Balvenie and even Tuthilltown Spiritsin New York, helped take the company private in 2000 where it remains today. The sherry influence isn’t quite as intense as with some whiskies we’ve tasted, but the result is impossible to dislike. There’s a rich, vibrant surge of flavour bursting with sherry, spice, orange peel and amaretto, all underpinned with a gentle sweetness which results in a whisky that’s dangerously drinkable. For the money, it’s one of our favourites – and a stunning dram to boot.Brown moves the shop to 22 Atholl Street; this becomes the headquarters for The Famous Grouse for 99 years You are responsible for all activities through your account. The Naked Malt blend, according to official tasting notes, has hints of buttery toffee and sweet spice on the nose, with notes of vanilla, stewed fruit and raisins on the palate with a rich and sherried spice finish, creating a contemporary spirit that gives consumers the freedom to enjoy their way.

Diane Stuart, Naked Malt Master Blender, said, “Naked Malt is blended using some of the finest Scottish single malts, each selected for its quality and individual flavour. Every cask of Single Malt Scotch whisky selected for our blend is nosed to ensure it meets our exacting standard. That’s a pretty bold statement, I know, but I haven’t been too enthused with the latest releases of Highland Park 12 or Macallan 12; neither one is really hitting the strides they used to. As for Glenturret and Glenrothes… well… I’ve never been a big Glenrothes fan and this exceeds nearly every one I’ve had. Glenturret I’ve had a few here and there, but nothing that’s ever made me purposefully seek them out – hence the statement above. When US Prohibition came into force in January 1920, the Scotch world was dismayed. Economic depression, coupled with high taxation, had forced a high reliance on export markets. However, as was the case with a handful of other blenders, the company’s distribution to markets close to the United States such as Canada, Latin America and the West Indies suddenly shot up. If some shipments made their way into the States, then so be it. Whiskybase B.V. Malt whisky continues to rise in popularity with consumers and, by changing our blended Scotch to a blended malt, we can use the individuality and character of single malts and create a whisky that stands out from the crowd,’ said Elaine Miller, global marketing manager for Naked Grouse. William Gloag dies; his nephew, Matthew Gloag III, takes over the business. The Gloags register their first blended Scotch: the Brig o’ Perth

If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Edrington, owner of Naked Grouse, said the change is being made in response to the increasing popularity of single malts, and demand from bartenders for an accessible whisky ‘with distinctive flavour’. Consumers and bartenders are looking for something more unique, which is why we wanted to move the brand on and change it.’ You might encounter single or blended malts in cask strength, which means the whisky is bottled straight from the cask it was matured in without being diluted. Cask-strength whiskies are typically around 60-65% alcohol by volume (compared to around 40% for a typical diluted whisky) and should always be drunk with water. Which whisky is right for me?I enjoy this whisky and I hope that when Edrington sold Glenturret to Art & Terroir they were able to write in some stipulations about getting access to barrels to keep this brand going without having to dramatically change it. They also sold off Cutty Sark to La Martiniquaise at the same time, so who knows what’s going to happen with that one. But for now they’re holding on to all the Grouse brands so I’m hoping they can keep this going and keep it tasty. Anyways, time to drink! We’ve pulled it out of Famous Grouse, so it will be a brand in its own right,’ she said. ‘We are trying to make it as simple as possible by moving away from some of the stereotypes of whisky and doing something for older millennials. While the drink fell out of popularity for a short while in the late 20th century, whisky has recently overtaken vodka as the UK’s most popular spirit and most local pubs will offer a good selection of malts and blends.

The first thing I like about this bottle is that there is practically no label! One of my biggest pet peeves with whiskey bottles (and especially with the Famous Grouse brand) is that you can’t really see what you are buying. That amber colored spirit is the star of the show, and the bottle should accentuate and display it as much as possible. A huge label like the typical Famous Grouse varieties sport just hides it, but with this version the whiskey is large and in charge. This mysterious brand is produced at an unnamed distillery somewhere in Speyside and the result is an outrageously drinkable whisky. It may only be an 8 year old single malt whisky at its core, but those eight years have been spent maturing in bourbon barrels and then followed with a further three months in deliberately bijou octave Oloroso sherry casks to imbue as much complexity and flavour as possible.

The blended malt is said to have notes of fudge, cooked apples and cherries, and is designed as a session whisky to be drunk on its own or with cherry cola. Now the expression is being relaunched as a standalone brand made from a selection of malt whiskies but without any grain, offeringa ‘more robust’ flavour than its blended predecessor. I can still taste that fruity aspect, but it’s more like dried apricots and orange slices at this point. Much less lemon or melon, which are lighter and weaker in intensity by comparison. I can also taste much more of the traditional scotch whisky flavors — specifically, that almost bread-like malted barley flavor with a touch of honey. On ice, this is significantly closer to the original Famous Grouse. Are you looking for the best whisky to buy? Or do you want to know more about how to choose the finest whisky for your budget? We’ve got all the information you need to make an informed decision, whatever your preferences.
