The JBL Bar 5.1 is a difficult device to give a definitive verdict on. On the one hand, we’re loathe to recommend a device that handles music the way that it does, but at the same time we were so impressed with the ease of turning a soundbar into a completely wireless surround sound system that we have to recommend it.

If however, you’re the type of person who's going to use your soundbar as the main sound system for your living room, this is not the device for you. Bar 5.1 Surround will get plenty loud to fill your living room. It measured 90 decibels at max volume and didn’t distort much when pushed to its limit. As a soundbar with a subwoofer this system is fine, giving a room-filling sound for those who want to keep the setup super-minimal. But if you want real surround sound then you simply pull out the end speakers, held in place via magnets, and place them at the rear of the room. There are a few sound mode options, which are basic but offer a simple way to adapt the sound setup to suit what you’re watching. These include movie, voice, music, sports and standard. You can also up the bass or wireless surround easily using the remote, so finding that perfect audio setup should be possible for most. If audio quality is important to you, you’d probably be better off going for a system like the Samsung HW-MS650. That doesn’t have the surround sound features of the Bar 5.1, but does have an impressive dynamic range. Der richtige Nachteil kommt aber noch, denn man braucht die Fernbedienung. An der Soundbar kann man nur ON/OFF, Lautstärke und Channel bedienen, alles Andere ist auf der Fernbedienung, wie auch die mit wichtigsten Buttons: Bass, Surround und Soundmode.
