One day I was riding along old State Road 174 north of Edisto Island and happened upon the Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge. This sprawling natural gem encompasses more than 12,000 acres. But the day I discovered it, I met more alligators than people. A lovely antebellum former rice plantation sits on the property. Besides the alligators, I saw wood storks, egrets and ibises. Lazy streams and ancient paths wind through the refuge. And I had it all to myself. There is a reason that the 5 hour scenic drive on the Sandhills Scenic Byway in Nebraska (yes, Nebraska!) is one of the top 10 scenic drives in the US. You’ll go over rolling hills, through a national forest, can see the famous Sandhill Crane Migration, drive over one of the world’s largest aquifers and see plenty of wildlife along the way. You’ll feel a world away from all your stresses and marvel at the pure wilderness and seemingly untouched nature. Your GPS will be able to get a fix, but with no data service available, I’ve found that my smart phone can’t pull up the map information. A stand-alone GPS with resident maps will probably be OK, but you get the idea. If you have one of these road maps, and can get GPS coordinates, you can find where you are. Ground squirrels seem to dare each other to run across the road in front of cars. It may seem harsh and cruel, but the safest strategy is NOT swerving to avoid them (see the photo here of someone who DID swerve. They were most fortunate that the car stopped where it did!).

Small towns dot historic Route 11 as it meanders north to south through the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The historic road evolved from Native American warrior path to a migration route known as the Great Wagon Road, before it became the Valley Turnpike in 1834. Wineries, apple orchards, farm stands, and local restaurants offer great places to relax and refresh along the route. This Sri Lankan cycling trip begins in Sigiriya. There are no planned activities today, so take time to relax in the hotel and rest those legs before our two-wheel adventure begins in earnest tomorrow. There will be a welcome briefing in the evening helmed by our tour leader; it’s a good chance to get to know the group a little and ask any questions you may have. Deer sometimes get spooked and jump out right in front of you. Yes, it’s happened to us several times and they too can cause lots of damage.

Ellie’s heart pounded but she tried not to let her voice waver. ‘I’m not crying, and I’m not sad. Where are you? Please - you shouldn’t be here. There’s nothing more to say. I’ve said it all before.’

A squad of German machine gunners on the Western Front discuss when the Great War will end; the Corporal shows the squad his calendar, revealing tomorrow is November 11, 1918. The squad's company launches an assault on French lines, and despite the heavy casualties sustained by both sides, the Germans manage to secure a trench; unbeknownst to the soldiers, the Armistice is being signed at the same time. The squad, in the presence of their aristocratic Captain, hears of the Armistice just after 11 am. It's polite to use your right hand when shaking hands or handing money and small objects to someone else. Read about our commitment to nature protection and restoration here, including our rewilding commitment for every customer who travels. When we reach the main road, we dismount and board the bus for the journey as the road to Kandy can get very busy. On the way, we stop at a spice garden to learn more about the spices used in the piquant Sri Lankan curries. The whole of the trip is an inspiration! Suresh's passion for his country, his enthusiasm for his job, his love for life is the absolute inspiration! Thoughts on Group Leader There are many diverse influences on the way that English is used across the world today. We look at some of the ways in which the language is changing. Read our series of blogs to find out more.

The bottom line is to let someone know where you’re going, even if it’s just a general idea. A very nice place AND no gas station Top Off Your Gas Tank So, next time you are doing a cross-country road trip, instead of flying through the state of Nebraska on I-80 and just assuming that Nebraska is only boring, flat, and cornfields, get off the beaten path a little and see what the locals see and love about our state!

In this gripping novel, the peaceful English countryside belies the horrible truths that lurk beneath the trimmed hedgerows, behind the closed doors of smart sitting rooms and within unspoken conversations.

Ellie’s neighbour, former detective Tom Douglas, has escaped to Little Melham in search of a quiet life, but finds himself drawn into the web of deceit as his every instinct tells him that what happened to young Abbie was far more than a tragic accident. It’s really not that much different than driving anywhere else, is it? Just some more things to consider and watch out for. Keep these in mind and you’ll have a great time. Though I noticed several enticing restaurants and wineries, time constraints prevented me from stopping to eat and drink. Suresh was incredible and deserves major credit for the success of the trip. He mixed hard work and going beyond the call of duty, with being friendly and sociable. He was always there for us and gave us a local-perspective in so many ways e.g. taking us to family restaurants, introducing us to delicious food, arranging curry cooking lesson. Advice for Potential Travellers

In a state that’s perhaps best known for the intersection of Interstate Highways, it’s fun to explore some of North America’s earliest crosscountry trails. Few people consider the beauty of western Iowa, where the layers of hills roll right out of a Grant Wood painting away toward the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River. The Natchez Trace isn’t your average scenic route: because of its natural beauty and historic value, it’s run by the National Park Service! The Natchez Trace is a meandering parkway that runs just over 400 miles from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee. Many of the people who complete the journey do so on bicycles or motorcycles, but, of course, it’s a great drive for motorists as well. A writer who travels... a traveler who writes... I'm just a guy who seeks adventure, authenticity, and to promote intelligence and maturity in these wild and crazy times. Former Terriers goalkeeper turned pundit Matt Glennon says he has had a lot of sympathy for Darren Moore since his arrival at the John Smith’s Stadium, but feels the failures that led to Saturday’s dreadful performance against Leeds United lay primarily at the manager’s feet. Editor’s note – since Trail Ridge Road is closed in winter, Google Maps won’t allow me to create a map of the road trip described below. Instead, I’m including a map of a location on the route so you can see where it is, and I will be updating the post with a proper map this summer!)
