Finally, I decided to try an angle grinder. I used a thin cutting disc, with a piece of aluminium tube as a guide, and didn’t cut too much at once. I did a practice cut and was pleased to see that I got a very clean edge. You’ll need plenty of screws to keep any specific screw from biting into shiplap or other wood wall covers/frames. This number will vary depending on the location of your shelf and how many studs you are likely to hit. Concrete is durable, but it doesn’t have the resolution to hold onto screws without getting bitten into. If the shelf doesn’t carry too much weight, this should not be a concern. Wood is a popular choice for floating shelves because it is strong, durable, and comes in a variety of finishes and textures. Not to mention, floating wood shelves can be stained or painted to match the decor of the room. Hard woods like oak, maple, and walnut are often used for floating shelves, but soft woods like pine can also work well. Oak floating shelves are common choice due to their strength and stability.

Installing floating shelves is a relatively straightforward process that can be completed with just a few tools and materials. It can also be a fun DIY project for those who enjoy home improvement. The shelf support rails have these 7mm diameter holes in them as shown by the above photo. These holes do not have threads in them. They simply accept the screws that come through the face of the shelf as shown below. You’ve seen them, right? Shelves that seem to be floating on the wall. No strings, no visible fasteners, no nothing. It’s like magic. So why not grab some of that fairy dust and add a slight sense of wonder to your home? And if they aren’t spaced apart appropriately, the shelf isn’t going to be balanced. Ikea floating shelves can be cut if needed. See my article showing what’s involved. This type of shelf is very versatile and can be mounted in many rooms throughout your home. It's made with flexibility in mind, so that you can add, move or remove sections whenever you want. That way, you're able to build them with just the functions you need. This makes a great choice for your hallway, since you can make sure it has enough hooks, rails and boxes for everyone in your home.As I no longer have access to that saw at my old company, I had to think of another way. Using a portable electric saw, or a jigsaw, was out of the question, because of the rough edges.
