A new challenge awaits you every morning on the run up to Christmas with Exit The Game: Advent Calendar. I was impressed by the variety of puzzle types and the fact that they managed to make the rooms, and even the box itself part of some of the puzzles. Any pictures I include for this review will be general pics and pics from the first few puzzles only. Perfect for those who enjoy solving puzzles, playing Escape Rooms or wanting to keep the children (or big kids) engaged this festive season.

But when Mairi offers up an escape game to review with the promise of free chocolate, I’m not going to pass this up, Christmas themed or otherwise. It is clear that a lot of effort was placed on this side of the game, as the story goes hand in hand with gameplay incredibly well. I have not played any Exit games prior to this, (although this will now be changing very soon) and was expecting the effort to have only been placed on the puzzles and gameplay aspects. Overall this is a suitable and accessible escape-room-advent-calendar which can be enjoyed, especially by families with children. Then there is a second indicated level to fold up for a more detailed clue that helps you a lot more. The fact that there is so much diversity of puzzles means that no matter your skill level, there will be some that you can do in a breeze, and some that will take some brain juice. Behind each door you will find a tiny 3d room containing an exciting puzzle, the solution of which, piece by piece, brings you closer to rescue.

Each clue reveals a little bit more, until the third which will provide you with the answer and a step-by-step tutorial, so you never miss out on the fun of solving the problems yourself! The main chapters are all the perfect length to provide you with a setting and scenario for the puzzle to follow and is wrote in a way that would be easy to read out for the family if they are also involved. My only issue with the writing, along with my issue with the puzzles, is that at one point it got a little ‘meta’. EXIT: The Game is a popular series of escape room games that deliver a huge variety of puzzles, bringing the escape room experience to your home in a small box. In ExiT: Advent Calendar you will find a mix of puzzles and riddles to guide you through each miniature room. This is also where my love for games like Kingdomino, Queendomino, Carcassonne etc come from as they are like little puzzles with optimal outcomes to find.

Players will take on the role of a wandering adventurer with their own special set of skills and their own reasons for travelling to this. The cave itself looks lived in, with signs of life everywhere, but as far as you can see there’s nothing alive nearby. Description: This advent calendar is an exit game and an adventure story in one: Behind each door you will find a tiny 3d room containing an exciting puzzle, the solution of which, day by day, brings you closer to rescue. As you can see below, she was very happy rolling around with the puzzle components whilst we did the hard work! There was a nice mix of logic puzzles, tactile puzzles, abstract thinking puzzles etc with little riddles that give you hints as to what you need to do in each room. I genuinely felt like a kid again with a chocolate advent calendar, only with the lack of self-control freedom of being an adult and able to open as many doors as I wanted. The story progresses with each completed day and is friendly to younger readers whilst still drawing in older players. It’s nicely compact and everything that is required to complete the entire contents, is either on or in the product itself.

The back of the calendar gives simple instructions to get you started; alongside pigpen, braille and tap-code ciphers. The writing also has the perfect tone that will allow younger players to understand what is happening, whilst also providing an interesting story for older readers to get into. Using a couple of decks of cards and a booklet of initial information, you’ll be led through a number of different puzzles. In the intro to the game, we are told that the game needs to be assembled by hand due to the way in which it is created. For more EXiT board games and my round-up of the best escape room board games, see my posts listed below. If you just simply do not understand what you are doing, then revealing the first hint will allow you to save a little more pride than subsequent hints.
