Are you sure? Including the scenes where DS9 is turned into a weapon with lots of turrets etc.? Or the big battle scenes happening around DS9 towards the end of the run? That’s rather impressive. Paramount Home Entertainment just announced that the newly restored Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition will arrive September 6, 2022 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with a bonus Blu-ray Disc that includes new and legacy special features. The film will also be released in a Limited-Edition Collector’s Set entitled “The Complete Adventure,” which includes the new Director’s Edition, the theatrical cut, and the special longer cut (originally broadcast on ABC in 1983), all on 4K Ultra HD, along with special features on Blu-ray. In addition, Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection will arrive on September 6 with all six big-screen adventures featuring the original series crew on 4K Ultra HD.

Ramsay tried to cut as much unnecessary footage as he could as long as the film's character and story development were not damaged. [15] :178–9 One of Roddenberry's ideas was to have the Vulcans speak their own language. Because the original Vulcan scenes had been photographed with actors speaking English, the "language" needed to lip-sync with the actor's lines. [33] Douglas Trumbull was given the task of finishing The Motion Picture 's opticals in time for a December 1979 release date. Got the 4K Director’s Edition yesterday and watched it with my brother last night. It’s still our favorite Star Trek Movie and I think the pacing of this version is just about right. The movie whizzed by and held our attention even though we’ve seen it countless times. Adam, Ken; Frayling, Christopher (November 27, 2008). Ken Adam Designs the Movies: James Bond and Beyond. Bob Peak (July 1, 2002). "Movie Poster Art Star Trek: The Motion Picture". BobPeak.com. Archived from the original on July 1, 2002. Star Trek: The Original Series wowed TV audiences with the boundlessness of space a decade before Star Wars hit the Big Screen, but its first motion picture had to deal with a world post-Star Wars.Tor.com reviewer Dan Persons noted the film features a number of characters on their own voyages of self discovery, with each defining their concept of fulfillment differently. Persons notes that the result of individual pursuits of fulfillment are damaging or pyrrhic; meaning is only satisfactorily found through interpersonal relationships. [59] Release [ edit ] Theatrical release [ edit ] I had no idea McCoy’s ‘all us machines’ line was found — am very excited about that, and will have to talk to some folks about what kinds of editing equipment are needed to make my own cut of TMP, which will include ZERO CG images. (ideally it would have the original discarded Yuricich painting of Vulcan, the one that wasn’t all junked up with worlds in the sky that appeared in STARLOG a couple of times, but I haven’t ever found a high-rez image of it.) Would definitely cut the little guy fleeing ep9 as well. I’d dearly love that. Of the two DS9 is my favorite, but I love Voyager as well, and if either show got the TNG treatment that would be wonderful, and most especially if it happened with both. This comprehensive 15-disc collection includes the first six big-screen adventures featuring the original series crew in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision and HDR-10. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition also includes Dolby Atmos). Both Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country are making their 4K Ultra HD debuts. The set also includes access to Digital copies of each of the six films, as well as hours of new and legacy bonus content. Rumors surfaced about difficulties regarding the special effects. A year into the production, millions of dollars had been spent but almost no usable footage had been created; [30] :4 Abel and Associates was not experienced in motion picture production and the steep learning curve worried the producers. Effects artist Richard Yuricich acted as a liaison between Abel and Paramount. To speed up the work, Abel passed off miniature and matte painting tasks to Yuricich. Despite being relieved of nearly half the effects work, it became clear by early 1979 that Abel and Associates would not be able to complete the remainder on time. [30] :6 By then Trumbull was supervising effects, greatly reducing Abel's role. (Because of Trumbull's disinterest in only working on special effects, he reportedly received a six-figure salary and the chance to direct his own film.) [35] Creative differences grew between Abel and Associates and the Paramount production team; [15] :204 Wise reportedly became angry during a viewing of Abel's completed effects, of which the studio decided only one was usable. Paramount fired Abel and Associates on February 22, 1979. [35]

I’m sorry but for something that’s been talked up as the “definitive” version that they worked on for so long, there are still far, far too many errors and bad decisions in this thing. I went over them in detail on the original post following release, but let’s recap:Audio Commentary by Robert Wise, Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Jerry Goldsmith, and Stephen Collins During the rewrite of the final scenes, the studio executives clashed with Roddenberry about the script's ending, believing that the concept of a living machine was too far-fetched. The executives consulted Asimov: if the writer decided a sentient machine was plausible, the ending could stay. Asimov loved the ending, but made one small suggestion; he felt that the use of the word "wormhole" was incorrect, and that the anomaly that the Enterprise found itself in would be more accurately called a "temporal tunnel".
